Description

Check out this Cross Country!
This 98 XC wagon is a well-maintained example, urchased a little more than a year ago with 162k miles on the clock. We've put less than 6k miles on the car driving it around town, nd on trips to San Antonio and Houston. We bought the car last winter because it was a great example of a car I remember fondly from my childhood!
Whether you're looking for something that seats 7 and can carry drywall, r you just need a strong commuter vehicle, r you want a safe (front and side airbags!) ride for your high-school or college student, his Volvo is a great, eliable car that we're sad to part with, specially given it's fantastic maintenance history...but we just got a great deal on a new car, nd need the driveway space.
A summary of maintenance follows:
Unlike most of the 90s 5-cylinder Volvos on Craigslist right now, his one has a great maintenance history, aving been maintained throughout its life by the Volvo dealer, ustin Vol-Tech, nd me! Indeed this '98 is a STRONG runner, ith many the basic Volvo issues covered already! For instance:
- Timing belt replaced at 130k miles (with a stamp in the logbook from Vol-Tech)
- Fuel pump replaced by Vol-Tech within the last 15k miles (with paperwork)
- Both front CV axles replaced by me ~5000 miles ago
- All brake pads and rotors replaced ~3000 miles ago
- Self-leveling rear struts replaced by me ~500 miles ago
- Front spring seats replaced (look out for these squeaking and creaking in all the other Volvo 850s and V70s on Craigslist)
- Brand new NGK spark plugs, osch OEM distributor cap & rotor, nd Bougicord spark plug wires (Note: whiteblock Volvos are VERY sensitive to spark plug wires--put in cheap ones and watch it misfire. Bougicord is the OEM for Volvo, nd these wires are not cheap!), eplaced by me ~750 miles ago
- Several oil (Castrol) and filter changes during our ownership with high-quality filters.
- Drained and filled transmission on alternate oil changes (Note: this is the SAFE way to change the transmission fluid. Powerflushing will just kill these transmissions).
- New serpentine belt (not installed yet, t's on my list to do this prior to sale)
- New Philips headlight bulbs
- Reasonably new tires (replaced just before we purchased the car) with PLENTY of tread, long with replacement/warranty certificates from Discount Tire (paperwork will be provided with sale)
Also of note are a couple of key positives unique to this wagon worth noting (and worth looking for in other similar cars if you're cross shopping):
- As a 1998, his car has standard cap-and-rotor ignition, nd does NOT have the ETM and engine computer issues of 99+ models (this typically costs ~$1200 to fix)
- Unlike MANY 1996-2004 Volvo wagons, his one still has a working AWD system. In fact, oth the driveshaft and the bevel gear are in great shape, ith no strange noises.
- I've had this wagon up on the lift multiple times, nd I'm hard pressed to find any rust on it at all!
- This wagon has the fold-up third-row seat in the cargo area!
- Freshly detailed, nd the paint shows quite nicely
All of the above being said, f course it's an almost 20 year old car, o it has a few small issues as well. Here they are listed below, n the interest of full disclosure:
- Front seat leather is cracked (this isn't too bad, nd the foam is not visible, ut it's worth mentioning)
- Steering wheel vinyl covering has worn away at the top of the wheel (though it's in great shape around the rest of the wheel)
- A couple small trim pieces that cover the bolts that hold in the ceiling handles are missing
- A couple of small (nickel-size) door dings and a little road wear on the bottom edge of the front bumper (as one would expect from a nearly 20 year old car)

***
Given all of the above, feel that the above price is fair given the strong maintenance history and turnkey nature of the car. I accept full payment/settlement in cash, ashier's checks, r credit cards (note that a 3.5% fee will apply to credit card transactions). I do not offer financing, ut can work with your credit union if you'd like.
Finally, f you are the winning bidder, require a $500 deposit via PayPal within 24 hours of your accepted bid, ith the balance to be paid (including PayPal CC fees) when the car is picked up, ithin 7 calendar days of your bid being accepted.
