Rarely seen, specially in running condition, his Jan. 1976-built Benelli Sei is one of about 3200 bikes produced in that style and size. This bike was originally delivered through a local San Diego dealership and has been in San Diego County for all of its 40 years. Rescued from a 20 year sleep, ast summer, ubstantial amounts of work and $$ have been spent to bring it back to a dependable and enjoyable weekend rider.
The bike has acquired about 19k miles on it. The original speedometer was sent in for repairs and lubrication while a NOS unit was put in its place. The replacement unit has racked up nearly 600 miles in the past few months and the original unit is all ready to be reinstalled to show true mileage once again.
The renewal process included a fresh set of BT45 tires of the correct sizes, lus new inner tubes. The master cylinder was rebuilt with a correct repair kit. The Brembo brake pads left some corrosion depression images in the cast iron brake rotors, ut the marks do not affect braking performance. Compression tested out at 180 psi on all cylinders. A new 530 pitch drive chain was fitted to the original sprockets which are still in good condition. The carburetors were cleaned and extra carb kit parts are included with the sale. New Honda CB500-550 intake manifolds were installed along with new o-rings on the manifolds. New NGK spark plug caps were used to replace the failed originals. An electronic regulator/rectifier was sourced from a UK supplier. The original points/condenser ignition system was tossed in favor of a $500 SACHSE digital ignition system with electronic spark advance curve. The original coil sets were replaced by large chromed twin-tower units mounted on a special bracket located where the stock air box was fitted. K&N pod filters are installed. The stock air box and several filters are included in the sale.
The original seat cover has some small cracking along the rear curve of the seat cushion. A new OEM style seat cover is included with the sale.
This bike was subject to a transmission recall back in the 1970s, ut apparently missed the opportunity to be repaired with the factory replacement parts. The bike is fully operable, ut 2nd gear tends to "jump" in/out without warning, epending upon how much load is placed on the engine at the moment. All other gears engage properly. Parts and technical expertise is available from parts suppliers in Germany and Spain. Copies of the shop manuals, arts manuals and transmission update information are all included. An owner's manual is provided, owever silverfish have eaten the cover page off.The clutch performs normally without a real hard lever pull. The starter clutch is beginning to slip on occasion, ut its behavior is somewhat random at the moment. I would replace it along with the needed transmission parts when the engine was torn down for restoration.
To increase oil capacity, Honda CB650 oil pan was purchased and installed on the engine right after purchase. The old pan was removed and inspected for signs of metal shavings, tc. but none were noticed.
A complete driver's tool kit was purchased from sellers in Germany, long with numerous other repair and replacement parts, ncluding a new inner rear fender section, ew tool tray, ew cables, eset trip knob, aster cylinder kit, aliper kits, ngine seals and a special stepped guide for the clutch pushrod to minimize oil seepage at the seal.
The fuel tank is remarkably clean inside, espite years of storage. There are no signs of the bike being dropped or crashed. The bike tipped over in storage and the fork ears were bent a little bit. They were straightened out and a new reproduction headlight cushion ($45) was installed with a new sealed beam unit. A reproduction tail light lens replaced the faded out original, ut an OEM CEV lens has also been acquired as a backup.
The exhaust pipes are all the originals and have no holes or cracking in the bodies, owever the chromed finish has suffered pitting and discoloration because of improper storage. With six separate mufflers attached to this free-revving engine, he sound it makes is unreal and lets you imagine that you are Mike Hailwood wringing out the 250 six cylinder roadracer back in the 1960s. The engine is incredibly smooth at all engine speeds and never causes the new replacement mirrors to blur the images behind you.
The suspension is all original, ncluding the forks and rear shocks. The shocks have pitting on the hardware pieces which were chromed, ut the front forks are nice and shiny. The huge original turn signals had been fitted with reflectors on the sides, hich had all fallen off. The signals were replaced with small bullet units from K&S. The rear grab rail was rusted, ut could be re-plated if desired.
A large cache of Benelli Sei parts was acquired for spares, ncluding a used Green fuel tank, ew replacement seat cover, ew wiring harness, e-chromed rear fender and left crankshaft cover, ew head and base gaskets, lus top tappet cover sealing ring. Other spares are carb kits, arb floats, oints and condensers, nother spare reset trip odometer knob and the extra speedometer. The parts will go with the bike as one lot.
Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer, ut I will assist with whoever comes to pick up the bike. I cannot crate the bike, ut will box the spares up to be shipped along with the machine.
A California-issued "SEI" personalized license plate is registered to the bike. If an out of the country buyer doesn't need it, t will be retained by me as a reminder of owning this rare and precious machine. You can enjoy the bike, ust as it is, ut a full restoration would be advisable to return it back to its former glory. New 6:6 muffler systems are still available for this model.
$300 deposit is required via PayPal. The remainder must be paid in cash or cashier's check drawn on a US bank.
