....an Elvis connection is always good, nd here's a fresh one: a 1961 Harley Davidson Topper scooter given by Elvis Presley as a gift to his most prolific songwriter, en Weisman. From 1956 to 1971, en Weisman wrote more songs recorded by Elvis Presley (fifty seven) than any other song writer in history, uch as "Follow That Dream", Pocket of Rainbows", Rock-A-Hula Baby" (and 54 others)... Known as the Mad Professor to Mr Presley, his gift was purely a leisure item, nd as such covered only approximately 800 miles. After Mr Weisman's death in 2007, e purchased this vehicle from his estate, nd proceeded to bring it back to life.
Technical specifications for the Harley Davidson Topper show that production from 1960 to 1965 included a higher compression "H" model from 1961, hich this unit has according to it's engine number (see photo). Harley Davidson makes a well known range of motorcycles, nd this is the ONLY scooter ever offered by the company. It has a very advanced front suspension link set up (see photos) that give the rider a very secure riding experience. The 165 cc two stroke (pre-mix) engine with a Constantly Variable Transmission (CVT) gives a 45 mph plus speed range with a Vespa / Lambretta feel. In 1959 an early production unit was ridden from Bakersfield CA to Death Valley and back, oing from 280 feet below sea level to a climb of 7850 feet - needing no repairs or adjustments requiring tools !!
The mechanical and cosmetic condition of this vehicle is "Museum Quality". Mr Weisman was a very talented and meticulous person, nd this was a very special gift from a very special person in his world. At present the vehicle is 100% functional and usable. We recommend light to moderate riding to keep functionality intact, hile preserving thepaint / chrome / upholstery ...Aside from the Elvis Presley connection, his scooter scores another high mark: Harley Davidson put a major effort into making a high quality "small motorcycle", nd to the trained eye, he good design and quality components are easy to see. The net result is a scooter that looks and drives great.
