Description

Offered for auction is this 1956 Harley-Davisdon FLH. This posting includes most of the motorcycle. including the most difficult to find. correct-for-1956 OEM parts: the professionally rebuilt engine. the frame. transmission. fuel tanks and oil tank. Many other OEM parts are included. as listed below. Without fenders. seat or exhaust. this is the perfect bike to be made into your fantasy Panhead. whether it be for restoration or as a personal custom. The Engine. This engine is a 1956 FLH 74. Everything except the heads has just been completely rebuilt. The aim was to create a strong running stock motor for practical street use. The engine work was performed by Bill Moeller at Bore-tech Engineering. Bore-tech specializes in cylinder repair and engine restoration services for expensive and obsolete classic motorcycles. Everything from the top of the pistons to the bottom of the crank is in perfect condition. This work included:Strip and blast casesComplete rebuild of bottom endRebuild and true crankshaftInstall new crank bearingsRepair stripped threads in caseInstall new sealInstall new oil pumpBore. hone and paint cylindersFit cam coverBegin head repairs. including exhaust port repair & fin repairThere are a couple of flaws on the outside of the timing case (see photos). The damage around the hole indicated is cosmetic (this is not a structural part). Also. there is some marring near and on the lowest fin. There are no broken fins on the cylinders or heads. The oil pump is aftermarket and state-of-the-art. It was installed on this build so that initial engine running-in could be done without fear of oiling problems. The original oil pump is included and can be refitted for the sake of originality. should the owner care to. Not shown in close-up but included are the OEM 'pan' rocker covers (you CAN see them in the first photo). The heads are both 1956. Both heads need new seats installed. The front head is an external oiler head. In 1956. H-D big twin engines were manufactured both internally oiled and externally oiled. This engine is internally oiled. so the front head either needs to be exchanged for an internally oiled head or machined to allow internal oiling. The rear head is also correct for this engine. although it is an internal oiler as needed. It also needs valve seat repair. The Frame. The frame is correct for a 1956 FLH. To my knowledge it has never been cut or modified in any way. Even the sidecar mounts at the lower front frame loops appear to be original (these were often the first things cut off by customizers). All tabs and tapped holes appear to be present and correct. The frame has been powdercoated semi-gloss black. The rear stand appears to be aftermarket. The Transmission. The OEM transmission is period correct. I do not know its condition. although it passes the ‘spin the shafts by hand’ test. I believe it is a three speed. The transmission mounting plate is perfect and powdercoated to match the frame. Gas Tanks. The gas tanks are OEM and correct. unique to 1955 & 1956. The left tank has a couple of dents. The tanks are intact with no cracks or holes. The Harley-Davidson script (left side only) is OEM. correct and very rare. The shifter and shift gate are OEM. The right side tank has had mounting tabs welded on. They need minor shaping to fit. The two tanks are a matched set. Fasteners. 90% of all fasteners needed. as called for by the parts book. are included. These fasteners are stainless steel and organized by part number & fastener type. There are 50% more of each fastener called for by the (included) parts book. What this means is there are spares of each of the fasteners included. So if you drop a couple. no problem!Fork. The front fork. headlight and mount are aftermarket. unused and correct for 1956. It shows only wear from time spent in various storage. The triple tree is OEM. The front fork tin and headlight is aftermarket. correct and unused. Wheels. Rear wheel: OEM. including rear brake and sprocket. Front wheel: OEM hub. freshly beadblasted and powdercoated. OEM star hub parts included. All star hub rebuild kits are available via aftermarket. Also included are the front axle and hub bolts. This front wheel needs a front rim and brake. available in the aftermarket. Other. OEM handlebars. OEM floorboards. OEM oil tank. OEM oil filter and OEM oil pump. OEM Linkert carburetor. new rebuild kit and OEM air cleaner. Two OEM manifolds. OEM speedo and OEM nacelle. The nacelle is correct for the year. the speedometer is not. Do not know if the speedo works. OEM horn trumpet. The chrome is rusting. but this is a rare OEM item. There is no horn. OEM jiffy stand and associated parts. The primary is complete but rough. The inner primary is broken as indicated by the arrow in the photo. These parts as OEM often leak badly and are best replaced with superior aftermarket copies. The OEM clutch parts included are as indicated in the photos. There are also remaining gaskets from the gasket kit (the gaskets not used in the engine rebuild). Included is the title. although it has not been transferred into my name. Also included several misc. brackets. pieces & fasteners.
