Description

1969 Harley Davidson XLH Sportster. Electric start. Matching belly numbers-769-9415. D9 frame code. VIN 69XLH13975. The true mileage is unknown, but the speedometer that was on it read 11,326. There is a case repair below the speedometer drive that looks professional an, of course, he speedometer drive hole was welded up so I'm guessing that was the mileage when the repair was effected. When I got it, n third gear under load, t wanted to start jumping out of gear. I pulled the transmission out and the gears and shafts look good but the side play was way off. The main shaft was properly spaced and that cured about 90% of it.If you really screw it on in third it may start to jump, ut after riding it about 200 miles,I haven't had it disengage. Possibly the countershaft may need re-spacing, ut as it is that's way down the road. There's an S&S Super B carb on it that has the throttle cable running up through the handlebar to the stock H-D pull spiral throttle. The circuit breaker is a Mallory auto advance unit. The combination works really well. New sheet metal all the way around. All the electric, wiring and charging systems work as normal (horn, lights, high beam etc.) There's a fuse block under the seat. New tires and rear rim with stainless spokes. Good brakes, replaced the shoes and pads on the rear. New 65A staggered dual exhaust system. Clutch looks good- plates, disks and springs. It's a wet clutch. All's good chain and sprocket wise. Florida title issued 10/15.This may not ever be a 100 point restoration, ut the small tank and exhaust are very period correct and it's pretty typical of what they looked like back in the day. It's easy to start and ride. Remember; this machine is almost a half century old now-no warranty of any sort. This rolled off the assembly line around the third week of July,1969. An interesting point about this bike is that the right hand side motor has the 1970 and later pad for the new style VIN by the front cylinder tappets, ut it's unstamped and used the old style VIN on the left case.
