Description

Here is a really nicely restored 1949 panhead for sale. It is an EL and has all of the correct and hard to find parts that make a 49 so special. We restored this bike for a friend in the twin cities about six years ago and he has decided to sell it. The bike is a winners circle judged amca bike and no expense was spared in making it just like it left the factory. The engine has been completely rebuilt. It has the original 48 49 heads. the correct el panhead cylinders and beautiful matched cases with an original vin number. The pan covers are the correct late 48 to 54 stainless steel covers. the generator was rebuilt by Dale Cashman and has the correct 49 only stainless steel end cover. The circuit breaker is original but has been updated with new points. nbsp; It also has the correct 49 only cap. The pushrods are nice original hydraulic units and the cam is a new andrews 61 panhead cam. This engine has plenty of power and the smoothness of the 61 inch powerplant. The chassis is really nice. nbsp; The wheel rims are original rechromed Kelsey Hayes rims. the hubs are restored originals with new seals and bearings. the spokes are cadmium plated just like original. Both of the hub caps are original and part of the deluxe package that this bike has. The fork is the first year of the telescoping hydra glide model and has the correct early fork legs. correct early fork tin (doesn't say hydra glide). and even has the early first generation fork bolts that have the nipple style stamped steel covers. The soup cans and back fork panels are originals also. The handlebars are original 49 50 speedsters that do not have the reinforcement in the center. The owner wanted to run the riser brace between the two risers to make it more rigid when riding. The front brake backing plate is the original sand cast one year only version and the brake tube is the correct small diameter version that was only used in 49. The back brake and drum are original harley pieces and a new sprocket and dust ring were riveted on to the original drum. All of the lug nuts are original as are both axles. The frame is a very nice original frame. The sidecar loops are perfect. the neck is perfect and all of the tank mounts are original. There have not been any repairs to it other than the toolbox strap being repaired. Its very common for the welded tool boxt straps to break under the vibration and weight of the toolbox and every day use. The sheet metal on this bike is all original the tanks are really nice 48 to 50 tanks with original emblems. The front fender is correct with no rivets on the outside and the rear fender is the correct one with the 3 ribs. and sergeant stripes on the flip. The tool box and outer primary covers are nice originals too. The bike is painted flight red to match the owners original paint 49 el that he has had for 40 years. Both crashbars are restored originals and painted black just like oem ones. The seat and saddlebags were done by Michael Paquette in North Carolina. The saddlebags have the correct grain on the leather and western style buckles. The seat pan is an original restored one. The speedometer is a restored original one that Janus rebuilt for the bike. It works perfectly and looks nice. The exhaust system is reproduction. The muffler has the seam on the bottom and the crimped on ends. The header pipes are made in the usa and fit nicely. The header pipe clamps are the correct early style with the spacer inbetween the bolts and no bent over edge. The muffler cover is a nice restored original piece that is really tough to find. The transmission is all rebuilt with new seals. bearings. shift forks and shift dogs. It works perfectly and has the correct case. kicker cover and top. The kicker arm and spring are original. The primary is set up as a chain drive and has the original outer cover and stainless derby and inspection covers. The shift gate and lever are rechromed originals and the shift knob is the correct nos santay knob that was sold in 1949. The clutch pedal and brake pedal controls are originals that have been restored and the clutch pedal bearing cover is the correct stainless steel version. This bike has all of the right parts that make a 49 so expensive and challenging to restore. it has gone through the checks and balances of the judging system and proven itself on its own merit. It runs and rides good. but will need a new battery before being put back on the road. I did my best to describe the bike as accurately as possible . It is priced at a fair market value.
