Description

1966 HONDA CB77 SUPERHAWK 305. super low mileage 5. 13THE ALMOST PERFECT MILESTONE IN THE MANUFACTURING OF MOTORCYCLESPlease close your eyes! Imagine (No. not with John Lenon). an almost perfect motorcycle. the HONDA 305 SUPERHAWK. Now. open your eyes. and think hard. Either you rode this bike in the 1960s. or dreamed about riding it (or just maybe. you were too young. or your mother didn’t let you). In any case. this bike made an indelible impression in you. but certainly in so many millions. just like you. and me too. Now. close your eyes again! Imagine the Iron Curtain. Yes. the one in Europe that existed only in the imagination (Yes. now you can think about John Lenon). For us. who lived east of it. it was as insurmountable as the great wall of China. but for westerners. it was only a symbolic hurdle. In the 1960s. I was a 20 some year young motorcycle-enthusiast. I was riding what I was allowed by our communist leaders. in my native country. Hungary. That is. Eastern-Block-Country made motorcycles. I often (almost always) went to the motorcycle races. and breathe the fumes. and immersed myself in the thundering sound-waves. and imagined that I was among the racers. Winning may not have been always in my dreams. but participating. had been very much. Low and behold. one day at the races. the HONDA 305 SUPERHAWKs. showed up. unbeknownst to us. There were three of them. They entered the 350 cc category. and they won first. second and third place. That alone did not impress me beyond belief. but entering the race as street bikes with full street oriented accessories. mesmerized me and my friends. The riders did not lay down low. but almost sit upright. They did not have open mufflers. but rather sounded smooth and quiet. Most of all. when they had to slow down. coming to the Rose Garden (a 360 degree turn). where we usually watched the races. their brake-lights were glowing. and that seemed ridiculous. but outrageously impressive. We quickly learned the new bike on the block. and from that moment on. HONDA was on my mind. I was not alone. all my motorcycle riding buddies felt similarly let down. The Iron Curtain would never allow us to have or ride one of these. If deprivation was loosely in my vocabulary. I started to realize that man does not live by bread alone. That was then. and now after living in the United States for over 44 years. I am the proud owner of this 49 year old. almost perfect motorcycle. Does it make me happy? Yes it does. Would I like to hold on to it a little longer. perhaps ever? The cool breeze of reality is touching my brain and heart. Eventually I will have to let it go. but only to a good home. where she will be appreciated and loved for many years to eternity. perhaps put in a museum or a private collection to preserve her for posterity. for generations to come. This bike looks and runs excellent. and occasionally I and my son take it on a club ride. or to the Rock Store in the Los Angeles area. Recently. a well known celebrity. who frequents the Rock Store came up to me and said “Now. this is a real motorcycle. Is it a ‘65"? It felt good. because he has a large collection of cars and bikes. yet he noticed mine. I prefer to sell this bike locally. and the prospective buyer should come and see it in person. If you want to buy this bike unseen. I prefer you to have inspect it by a third party. I will not arrange for shipping. but will assist for pick-up once it is paid for.
