For Sale: 2001 BMW 540IT Sport Wagon – Nicely Optioned
First things First, ’ve spent a lot of time and money getting the car sorted in the last several months. The car has over $6,000 in recent service. Most of the items recently done within last 100-200 miles:
1)New Lemforder front control arms – Two each side2)New front coil springs3)New headlight adjustment lever (connects to right control arm)4)Rebuilt ABS sensor by ModuleMasters5)New front wheel speed sensors6)New left front wheel bearing with ABS pickup sensor7)New front rotors and brake pads8)New oil pan and gasket9)New valve cover gaskets10)Intake removed and cleaned11)Coolant leaks repaired12)New thermostat13)New purge valve14)Fresh oil change15)New $300 battery16)Previous owner replaced rear suspension air bags17)Previous owner replaced transmission with a very low mileage unit.18)Previous owner installed new Alternator with lifetime warranty
Minor needs that I haven’t yet gotten to:
1)Front right fog light needs a new connector plug.2)Intermittent “Check license plate light” warning – Contact needs to be cleaned3)Phantom “Door Open” warning – Doors are all closed……perhaps a sensor is bad on a close door switch.4)Left rear rocker has a small section of rust. I would replace about 12”-24” section cleanly and be done with it.5)Rear lift gate has cracking / bubbling paint, ikely from rust.6)Radio works intermittently. Sometimes fine, ut most of the time just static like antenna signal is lost.7)Cup holder broken and won’t stay closed.8) It is a 15 year old car with minor dings, ents, crapes, nd misc. cosmetic flaws. That said, t is in better shape than most 15 year old cars.
I bought the car in October 2015 and have only driven it a couple hundred miles. I refused to drive it regularly until I got it completely sorted out, nd it has been in and out of the shop pretty regularly. I have a stack of receipts for labor and parts that total over $6,000 and I am missing receipts from the previous owner for the air bag/alternator/transmission installation labor (have parts receipts for these).
The car is nicely optioned with the M-steering wheel, PS nav unit, port seats with big bolsters, tc. It is a great car with a very strong engine and smooth shifting transmission. The car is sorted mechanically and ready to go for the next owner to enjoy and pick away at the minor cosmetic issues remaining.
I would love to keep the car. It was my first BMW, ut I was blind sided by the maintenance needs that the previous owner neglected to mention to me. I also have a needy Porsche 964 that will be getting most of my attention as Spring approaches. The e39 540 wagon is in my opinion one of the best looking wagons ever made, nd a beast of a utility vehicle. I love the power and drivability of such a big heavy vehicle. This is a great opportunity for someone to make my loss their gain. I’m obviously losing a ton of money in the car and the typical e39 540 maintenance items are already done. Talk about piece of mind!
I’d drive this car across country tomorrow. It is ready for the next owner. Thanks for looking.
