Further cleanout of surplus vintage cars and parts: This is a no reserve auction and the BMW will be sold regardless of price, on or off auction.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This particular auction is for an original authentic, two owner, (I am technically the 3rd owner), matching numbers, vintage 1972 BMW 2002 Coupe in it's original Agave green color as shown. It is not a typical run of the mill 2002, it is a nice honest unmolested original survivor that has almost zero rust and will be an easy restoration. It has never been painted and still has it's worn original Agave green factory paint. Nice thing about an original paint car is that you can actually see the real condition of the body without worrying about what has been hidden underneath any number of repaints. No bondo. The paint is worn thin and the gray primer is showing through in many spots. The roof was primered to protect any bare metal that came through - evidently the car spent it's early years in a hot sunny climate - probably the reason why it has factory air conditioning. It has been nicely modified, using the original engine and a BMW 5 speed transmission. The last owner had the car for many years and had the original single barrel carb and manifold removed and installed a Weber 32/36 DGAV-33B1 dual throat carb and manifold. He also had the original 4 speed transmission removed and had a BMW 5 speed installed. (I have the original carb, air cleaner, manifold and 4 speed transmission available for purchase should the buyer want them). This is an excellent survivor for someone who is proficient at doing their own work and wanting the work to be done properly and at their leisure. An easy restoration. I do not detail my cars for sale but I DO wash and clean them so that you and I can clearly see the good and bad points. Nothing is hidden from view under years of filth, etc. I will answer all email questions and take additional photos of any specific area on request.
ENGINE:
It is the original matching numbers motor but it is stuck from sitting unused for years. Engaging the starter will only get the clicking sound of the solonoid. Engine will not rotate. The elderly owner said that he had the engine overhauled and some minor performance work done on it years ago when he was driving it - He did not elaborate on what was done, so take that for what it is worth. I do see some aftermarket silicone gasket cement in places on the motor. The oil is as clear as new - it is the old oil when the car was put up for storage years ago - oil has not been changed. Motor is equipped with a Weber 32/36 two barrel carburetor marked DGAV-33B1 - 7-6D. Intake is the correct alloy manifold matching the Weber carb.
TRANSMISSION/ CLUTCH/ DIFFERENTIAL:
A BMW 5 speed transmission was installed in the car years ago. The car cannot be driven but all 6 gears seem to be present while shifting the transmission stationary. Clutch hydraulics (slave and master cylinder) will probably need replacing or rebuilding. Differential looks to be in good condition externally - no damage noted.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT:
Original paint. Very nice, original and straight with no damage and is clean and complete. The battery box bottom has a couple of small holes in it - very easy to patch - replacement not necessary. The car will come with no battery - the one that is in it is no good.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT:
Original paint. Nice and solid with the exception of a couple of very small holes in the spare wheel well. Includes spare tire/wheel and original jack and lug wrench.
EXTERIOR SHEET METAL, BODY PANELS:
One of the best bodys I have seen on any 45 year old car. Typical minor surface rust coloring on the chassis underneath. Obviously no bondo. One minor hole in the front valance as shown.
CHROME:
Bumpers are quite decent - a couple of ripples here and there on the back - nothing worth mentioning. The rest of the brightwork is mostly aluminum and serviceable. There are a few trim pieces missing - Right door upper trim piece, trunk lip trim piece and left bottom rocker trim piece (the long one).
PAINT:
Obviously needs paint. Has the factory original Agave green paint and has never been repainted.
GLASS:
All of the original glass is good - nothing broken. Door windows roll up and down easily. Rear windows operate easily. Windshield has a couple of repairable rock pecks.
CHASSIS/FLOORS:
Again, the strong chassis and underside are another of the best features on the car. No rust other than some minor surface rust coloring here and there.
INTERIOR/UPHOLSTERY:
The original carpeting and interior upholstery are still there. Needs new carpeting. Upholstery can be used as is but needs replacing if doing a restoration.
DASH AREA:
Still looks nice and original -padded dash top is cracked. All original gauges. Air conditioning console is complete and intact. Radio is a Kenwood KRC2008 cassette, amfm that actually works - well, the amfm works - don't have a cassette to check that function. Both rear speakers in the parcel tray are shot from the sun.
AIR CONDITIONING:
Has factory air conditioning - air conditioning compressor is mounted in the engine compartment but the hoses have been cut - probably done when the 5 speed transmission was put in or the engine was overhauled (If indeed it was), so the air conditioning system will need some work.
TIRES & WHEELS:
Old Michelin X in rear and old Kumhos in the rear - Old - should be tossed out.
EXHAUST:
The exhaust system actually looks pretty decent and useable.
SUSPENSION/BRAKES/STEERING:
Looks good and solid in that department. Looks complete with nothing missing and no damage. Brake hydraulics will certainly need replacing or rebuilding. MISCELLANEOUS:
As of this writing Hagertys used car values lists the 1972 BMW 2002 at $7700 fair #4 condition, $12,800 good #3 condition and $21,900 excellent #2 condition, with recent prices starting a spike upwards rapidly. Concourse condition is now at an all time high of $37,100. This is a 45year old used classic car - it is as described as shown and is not guaranteed. It steers and rolls easily for shuttling and transport. PAPERWORK:
There is NO TITLE. Comes with a 1989 Alabama registration certificate and a bill of sale. Serial number is 2579848.
FACTORY ID PLATES:
The Vehicle identification ID plates and engine number plates are all factory intact, matching and correct as shown.
INSPECTION OF CAR:
Inspections are welcome and encouraged at any time before the auction ends.
SHIPPING:
Shipping or collecting the car is the buyers responsibility. If necessary I can assist with shipping arrangement but it is usually best for the buyer to acquire shipping from their local source. I will assist with loading the car.
PAYMENT & BIDDING:
Contact me if you have less than 5 feedbacks before bidding or your bid WILL be cancelled. A $500 non refundable deposit via Paypal is due immediately after the auction closes. The balance is due within 3 days via wire transfer, priority or overnight mail with a bank cashiers check. Full payment is to be made IN ADVANCE of collecting the car. IN ADVANCE, BEFORE YOU COLLECT THE CAR - This is an auction and you have plenty of time to inspect the car personally or have a 3rd party inspect the car - inspections are welcome and encouraged. Winning the auction does not mean that you now have the privilege of coming to inspect the car to see if you like the color. When the auction is over, it is your car and payment is due at the close of the auction per these instructions. The car is at my home and can be left here for up to 30 days at no charge before collection. After that I have the option of charging a storage fee. I have sold approximately 25 cars and motorcycles on ebay and they were all a bargain for very satisfied buyers.
