Description

1990 CAMARO IROC-Z RPO 1LE/G92Rare factory built race car - 1 of 34. few original cars remain. #61 of 62 1LEs built in 1990. Last year of the IROC Camaro. In the mid 1980s. the C4 Corvette dominated sports car racing and as a result was banned from SCCA Escort Racing in 1988 and 1989. Chevrolet countered with the spec Corvette Challenge series in 1988 and 1989. During this period. Camaro racers had been asking Chevrolet to produce upgraded parts for their cars. and in late 1987 Chevrolet began an in-house engineering effort to convert the Camaro into a legitimate factory competitive road race car. To qualify the Camaro to compete in the Showroom Stock classes and later the Firehawk race series. all parts needed to be regular production (RPO) parts available to the public. To assist the in-house engineering effort. one of the most successful Corvette racers. Tommy Morrison. was enlisted to race these specially equipped Camaros. In late 1987. he took delivery of six specially equipped 1988 Camaros out the back door of the Van Nys assembly plant. trucked them back to his race shop in Albany. Georgia. installed safety equipment and went racing. The parts developed on the track with GM engineering became the 1LE/G92 race package. Wearing Morrison's #97 and #98 and with Mobil 1 sponsorship. his Camaros won 15 of 16 races in 1988 and 1989 against the best that Ford and Chrysler had to offer. His #98 car won 5 of 8 races and the driver. team and manufacturer championships in 1988. Only 4 1LE cars were officially produced that year. In 1989 word was out on the option package and 111 were produced. However. the 1LE option came in two versions. one intended for the street that came with the L98 5. 7 engine and automatic. and could be ordered with creature comforts like air conditioning. The race version came only with the 5. 0 TPI (LB9) engine. special 5 speed transmission and G92 rear axle. This version was equipped with an extensive package of upgrades intended for racing and could not be ordered with air conditioning or other unnecessary options like radio. power windows. etc. The race 1LEs were equipped as follows:5. 0 TPI engine with special calibration5 speed transmission with special gearingLarger (11. 8 inch) front disc brakes with PBR (Corvette) heavy duty front calipers mounted on special front heavy duty spindlesRear disc brakesBaffled fuel tankAluminum driveshaftEngine oil coolerSpecific front and rear shocksUnique durometer jounce dampersDual catalytic low restriction exhaustG92 limited slip special differential (3. 45 ratio) Fog lamp delete to improve coolingSpecial brake proportioning valveRadio deletePower accessories deleteIn 1989. the 1LE Camaro. now in more hands. swept the SCCA and IMSA Showroom STock series. It won every race in the SCCA Escort Endurance Championship and captured the "Car of the Year" award in the IMSA Firestone Firehawk Series. 1990 was the last year of the IROC Camaro due to the termination of the IROC contract by Chevrolet. No IROCs were produced after 12/3/1989. This was the first year of the updated interior for the Camaro. which included a driver's side air bag and redesigned dash. making it extremely rare. Only 34 of the race 1LEs were built in 1990. With most converted to full race cars. very few remain in stock as delivered condition. This rare example has only 1400 miles since new and has always been in the hands of passionate collectors. Completely original with dealer stickers still on the windshield. It comes with extensive documentation including the original windows sticker. build sheet. dealer invoice and numerous magazine articles. On a clear Florida title. This car was just serviced at Chevrolet including: drain and clean fuel tank. new fuel pump. filter and sender plus oil and filter. Runs as new and no worries about old gas. This is a rare investment quality Camaro for the serious collector.
