This 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS coupe is an ideal example, icely preserved and loaded with options, aking it a smart investment as well as a lot of fun to drive.These big GM coupes never look so good as when they're finished in bright white, nd the long nose/short deck styling definitely works. Perhaps it's the blend of the formal roof line with the SS ground effects and graphics that make it so appealing, ut there are few more recognizable cars from the '80s than this. That white paint looks extremely good with few imperfections, nd the stripes have been removed to give it a very clean, ggressive look, aking us wonder why everyone doesn't do it that way. There's also a cowl-induction hood, ut that's a popular modification that looks great. It's actually quite rare to find one of these that has been so carefully maintained; usually they were beaten to within an inch of their lives and driven into the ground. The big doors fit well, he urethane front bumper doesn't show the usual scuffs from tall parking curbs, nd there's a shine that suggests a lot of weekends spent looking after the paint. It's not perfect, ut it's awfully nice.A burgundy bucket seat interior was the only choice in your new SS, ut GM went the extra mile to make it look suitably sporty. The seats themselves show very, ery minor wear, ostly on the driver's side bolster where it obviously gets the most action, ut the upholstery itself is nicely preserved and not faded by the sun. Round analog gauges are bright and crisp, ncluding an anemic 85 MPH speedometer and a tach that parks itself at 900 RPM when you turn the engine off. The SS included a long list of standard features and this one packs almost every available option including A/C, ower windows and locks, ruise control, nd a high-end AM/FM/cassette stereo. With T-tops, t's both sporty and fun in the summer with the all-weather comfort of a coupe. The trunk looks completely unused, ncluding the original space-saver spare that doesn't look like it's ever seen pavement.The only engine was GM's 305 cubic inch V8 with throttle body fuel injection. Torquey and with a great V8 exhaust note, t made the SS more than a poser, ut it wasn't intended to be an all-out street racer, ither. With the myriad of upgrades available with little more than a phone call, t's rare to find one that's 100% stock like this. From the air cleaner to the exhaust manifolds, t is just the way the factory intended. The neat thing is that all the little stuff like the A/C fittings and even the master cylinder are all bright and shiny, o you know this car's had an easy life. A 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission was the only choice, nd 3.42 gears out back make for easy cruising and lively acceleration. A custom exhaust system was recently installed so it sounds like the V8 muscle car that it truly is, ut there's still a catalytic converter, o it's legal just about everywhere. 15-inch American Racing alloys are a nice-looking alternative to the original hoops and wear 245/60/15 BFGoodrich radials.Complete with maintenance receipts, riginal bill of sale, ealer invoice, nd manuals, his SS will always have a place in the collector car world.
