Description

Considering all of the American classic muscle cars in the world, none come to mind that are more heavily exported than the Corvette. When the US auto industry is studied for its ability to compete worldwide, this Chevrolet is unmatched for its performance, style and value. We citizens have known that since 1953 and the rest of the globe shares our admiration for this symbol of American motoring leadership. This 1996 Chevrolet Corvette Collector's Edition marks the final year of C4 production. All of the 5,412 Collector Edition Corvettes were fitted with special trim and finished in traditional Sebring Silver, so they're easy to spot, and they weren't wrong when they named it. That color ages well of course, and gives the Corvette a subtle, high-tech look that complements the car that the Corvette had become by 1996: a technological tour-de-force. Walking around the car you quickly notice this 'Vette has lived a good life, although it has been used as intended, which is the best thing to do when you own a Corvette, regardless of the year. With the exception of some small marks in the clear coat, the car is in very good overall condition and it hasn't been modified or dressed up with any of the many aftermarket add-ons that are so popular with Corvette enthusiasts. Inside you find an equally well-preserved cabin. The Dove Grey leather seats show well and are as supportive as they were in 1996. "Collector's Edition" is also embroidered on the seat backs, in case you forgot you were in the top of the line model. The carpets, dashboard and frankly everything your eyes see or hands touch is in great shape, indicative of a car that's been properly maintained and loved. All the gauges are fully functional, and the combination of digital and analog instruments is not only cool, but surprisingly easy to read. You may also have noticed that we almost ran out of room listing all the features these cars carried as standard equipment, because these cars only came loaded with features. And it is all fitted inside a cabin that wraps around you like a cockpit and your hand rests comfortably on a fat 6-speed manual shifter. There's even reasonable cargo space under the rear hatch! The Collector's Edition used the final variant of the venerable 350, called the LT4 and generating an impressive (for 1996 anyway) 330 horsepower. Mated to that 6-speed manual transmission, power flows to the wheels seamlessly, and explosive acceleration is only a prod of your right foot away, making this perhaps the ultimate point-and-shoot machine. The engine bay is extremely tidy, suggesting expert care and a distinct lack of foul-weather driving, and the lack of modifications means nobody's been under the hood tinkering with the factory reliability. You could spend a weekend detailing it and it would probably look like new, but we're guessing that you'd prefer to be out driving, which is what this car does best. Powerful brakes, complete with ABS and traction control, are a Corvette hallmark, and it wears gorgeous A-mold wheels and staggered 255/45/17 front and 285/40/17 rear BFGoodrich G-Force radials. People who buy Collector's Editions normally treat them with care, use them sparingly and maintain them to the highest standards.
