If you're looking for an unusual piece of luxury muscle, few cars do it better than this 1968 Chevy Caprice. With a great-running 327 inch small block wrapped inside a highly original shell, it's a great choice for the Chevy fan that already has all the usual stuff. For a sleeper like this, code V Sequoia Green is a great choice. Not only is it low-profile, but it looks great today now that earth tones are back in style. Given what appears to be just a single repaint in the past 46 years, it still looks fresh and shiny, with acres of sheetmetal finished with shiny paint that duplicates the original hue exactly. That repaint was purely to freshen the car, as it appears that all the sheetmetal is original. If you look hard, you can probably find a few blemishes here and there, but the overall look is pretty darned nice. There's some water-spotting on the surface that could easily be removed by a professional detail shop, but otherwise it looks great. All the chrome is likewise in good shape, from the heavy front grille and bumper to the rear bumper that frames three pairs of taillights as tradition would dictate. This car also wears a black vinyl top that gives the big Caprice a rather formal look that totally works with the fender skirts. If you need a muscle car with room for six, well, look no further than this Caprice. With bench seats wearing green brocade seat covers, it's fresh and clean and offers style that's right out of the latest season of 'Mad Men.' The funky green cloth looks like it came from your grandmother's house, but if you wanted plain old vinyl, you'd buy a garden-variety Camaro or something. No, the upholstery in this top-of-the-line cruiser is so weird it's cool and you won't be able to keep people from craning their necks to get a good look inside. As Chevy's top luxury machine, it includes factory A/C (converted to R134a but in need of a recharge) and the original AM radio still lives in the dash. You'll note that the door panels and dash are original, so you know this car has always been special to someone, because the care shows everywhere you look. Long road trips are this car's specialty given the positively massive trunk that carries a correct mat and what just might be the original spare tire.So all that luxury stuff is nice, but when you need horsepower, this Caprice definitely delivers. That's the original, numbers-matching 327 cubic inch V8 under the hood, recently painted bright Chevy Orange, which stands out in the highly original engine bay. It remains entirely stock, so it idles so smoothly you can barely feel it, but when you put your foot down, this big cruiser will surprise a lot of more performance-oriented machines. A recent dual exhaust system gives it a muscular rumble that seems appropriate without giving away the secret, and it quiets down at speed making this a great car for road trips. Backed by a slick-shifting TH400 3-speed automatic transmission and a robust 10-bolt rear end with highway gears inside, it certainly has the hardware to support the power and weight. Factory steel wheels with hubcaps and staggered 205/75/14 front and 215/75/14 rear whitewall tires definitely help with the luxury look. This highly unusual and surprisingly quick Caprice draws crowds simply because you don't see them all that often. Not many cars can do it all as well as this one, and I defy you to find more car with more performance for less money anywhere. Call today!
