THIS 1963 CITROEN 2CV HISTORY
We purchased this original 1963 Citroen over 3 years ago and it has been on our list of projects ever since. After countless statements having to do with "We'll get to the 2CV soon", he car remains in our enclosed facility in the same condition as when we acquired it in 2012. The good news is that it has always been stored inside, nder cover and represents an excellent original example of a correct Citroen 2CV. While it is in the project category, e certainly would classify it as a light project since it is virtually 100% complete and was running when we received it. It was also drivable at that time but we have not started or driven it since our acquisition of the car.
The 2CV carries a clear California title and VIN #1428075. The mileage shows as 30,428 km and, hile the previous owner indicated the mileage is correct, he title shows "Exceeds Mechanical Limits." Considering the age of the car and contradiction relative to the mileage we can only represent the car as TMY (Total Miles Unknown).
Our research indicates that VIN# 1428075 was produced as a 1963 2CV AZA/AZAM between 3/63 - 12/63. The VIN range for cars produced during that period was #1350001 - #1434390 (a total of 84,389 cars) with this example being produced during the latter part of 1963. The ID tag on the firewall appears to be correct and original to the car and there is no indication that this car is a later model, ncorrectly (and illegally) imported example. The car has the proper trim, instrumentation and distinguishing characteristics that clearly separate it from c2CV's that have been "built" to have the appearance of older, more desirable Citroen 2CV's.
OVERALL CONDITION
The 2CV is a very solid, ust free straight example of an early 60's Citroen. There is no accident damage to any of the body panels including the hood, runk, oors and rear trunk. In fact, s we took photos of the car that has been under cover for some time in our enclosed facility we were amazed at how rust free this car really is. A review of the photos will support our statement.
The doors close and secure properly and, s a 1963, he car is fitted with the desirable "suicide doors." It is difficult to tell if the paint color is original to the car since the entire car is painted in a rather unique shade of blue/turquoise. This includes the body, nner door jambs, runk, nderside of the hood, ngine bay and the rear area including the trunk (refer to photos). Francophiles should appreciate the unique color that is very befitting a vintage 2CV.
The interior is in excellent condition and the seats, ront & rear, have been covered in a durable vinyl material. The gray color is very neutral and is also easy to care for. Bother front and rear seats are covered and there are seat belts (lap) mounted both front and rear. The front seat retains the original 2Cv seat frames and newer springs for good support. The seat cover in the front extends across both bucket seats creating the appearance of a "bench seat. The original configuration could be achieved by simply removing the existing vinyl cover and recovering the seats. It appears as if the rear seat is also original to the car and was re-covered in the same manner.
Door panels are excellent, he front windows open and latch and the floor vinyl mating is in excellent condition. Front rubber mats cover the front floor. Glass is all good including the windshield and rear window. The main portion of the top needs to be recovered but the important rear window is in place. For "fair weather" buyers."who needs a stinkin' top'!
When the car was painted, t received a total and complete repaint (with the exception of the very bottom floor of the trunk (refer to photos). So, he inner door jambs, nner interior panels surrounding the doors, dash and underside of trunk/hood are all painted the same lovely color.
From a mechanical perspective, e have limited information since we only drive the car around the block when we first purchased it from a California owner. The car ran, hifted through all of the gears and the brakes were functional. It had a freshly rebuilt carburetor that was installed by the cars previous owner. As a result of it sitting, t rolls but the brakes are slightly hung-up. We do not have a mechanic on staff, nd other priorities do not allow for the time for us to spend time getting the 2Cv started. However, iven the simplicity of these cars, e do not expect that it would require considerable effort to do so.
Of course, e recommend that the fuel be changed and the brakes checked before taking the Citroen out for a drive. As a result of the circumstances we are unable to offer any guarantees / warranties relative to the condition of the Citroen as is the case with the purchase of any 50+ year old vehicle. We do, f course guarantee that the car is being sold with a clear, ransferable title. The car was registered when we purchased it so there are no back fees or penalties on the 2CV.
Please do not hesitate to call us if we can answer any questions regarding this early "suicide door" Citroen 2CV. We can be reached at 925-846-1451 during normal business hours.
HISTORY OF THE CITROEN 2CV
The Citroen 2CV, ffectionately known as the "Ugly Duckling" must be the most famous Citroen of all times. It has been said that "You either love them or you don't understand them." The one thing that everyone agrees upon is that the unique 2CV has certainly made an impact on the world.
The "Deux Chevaux" was designed to be a useful car on the back roads of France, ith as little maintenance as possible. One criterion during development was that the car should be able to hold a basket of eggs while driving over a plowed field without breaking an egg. The Citroen's ride proved to be impressive, ven over speed bumps at a relatively high speed. It was also a car that was to be inexpensive, light weight and available to the masses.
Mechanically, he car is interesting, o say the least. With its 2 cylinder boxer, ir cooled design, he car had a whopping 9 horsepower when released in 1948. By the early to mid-1960's the 2CV was powered by a 602 cc, 3 horsepower engine that allows for a top speed of close to 70mph. Surprisingly, he cars have plenty of power for around town and are happy to rev flat out all day long. The cars are U.S. legal and can be used in modern day traffic.
Like older cars, ust is a 2CV's main enemy. A wise buyer will make sure their car came from generally rust free regions including California / Arizona, arts of France, pain and Portugal, ather than northern Europe. Check the front axle tube mounts, ongitudinal shock mounts and the gas tank area for signs of rust. On the body, loors, ills, windshield frames - especially around the vent - rear panels above the bumper and fender edges are potentially nasty. Also check the rear bolt area of the front fender, nd the headlight bracket support. Replacement chassis were made and these are galvanized, o they're easy to spot.
With 3.7 million 2CVs built, arts are not problematic, specially with clubs and suppliers present around the world. The one exception can be early trim pieces. Body panels are readily available and easy to install, eaning body work is not as scary or expensive a proposition as on other cars. Pre-1961 models are the most collectible and increasingly difficult to locate. After that, ondition and color tend to drive a purchase rather than model year.
PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER
As always, e recommend that you carefully review the seller's background for any collector car being sold over the Internet. It is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, ut not limited to:
- How long have they been in business?
- How much experience do they have with collector cars?
- How many positive collector car vehicle sales have they completed (positive eBay feedback)?
- How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle?
- Do the photos show details of the interior, xterior, op, hrome, etc. or are they simply "glamour shots" taken from a distance?
- Does the seller have a Surety Bond to protect the financial transaction?
- What about insurance, icensing by the state, nd a local business license?
- Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, rievances?
- Does the seller enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation?
- Can the seller assist with funding sources, ransport and out of state/country sales?

However, e make every effort to accurately represent our vehicles, nd highlight both positive items as well as areas that require attention. We ask that prospective buyers consider our eBay history/feedback, tanding in the community, length of time in business, nd other factors when purchasing a collectible vehicle from Classic Cars Ltd.
- Minor cosmetic issues/flaws may be present on every vehicle (regardless of cost) including small chips, icks, cratches, tc. that can be seen on even the best restoration, r even a relatively new, sed "pre-owned" vehicle. Also, wnership of a collectible / specialty vehicle is more enjoyable if the owner is familiar with the "realities" of these unique cars. Unlike more modern day vehicles, hese cars require regular, ngoing care/maintenance and some mechanical knowledge, patience, nd understanding can make the experience considerably more pleasant. That said, ollector / "specialty" car owners will tell you (emphatically) that they love their cars and wouldn't trade them for anything!!
- The information contained in this description is believed to be accurate but, n some instances, as been provided by the car's owner / owners or outside sources. As a result, e are unable to guarantee the accuracy of the information.
