THE PEOPLE’S PICKUP
Shortly after developing the Microbus and Panel Van, olkswagen realized that there was a strong demand for a pickup as well. In the early 50’s, W created the Pritschenwagen, single-cab pickup. Based on the same platform as the other transporter models, he Single Cab pickup provided a single bench seat for the driver and 2 passengers up front with a large pickup bed at the rear which is one of its most unique features.

With 45 square feet of cargo space, ll three sides of the bed are actually hinged "gates" that can be unlatched and folded down to provide a conveniently flat surfacewhich canbe loaded without having to lift the cargo up over the sides of the bed. It also makes for a great tool bench.

Finally, o make good use of the space beneath the elevated bed floor, he optional "tool box" (aka "treasure chest") compartment with locking doors has another 21 square feet of cargo space and is perfect for storing tools and materials safely and out of the weather. No other pickup truck in the North American market offered this unique and practical design.

As all air cooled Vee-dubs have recently experienced a revival of astonishing proportions, he Volkswagen Single Cab pickups are now considered an automobile icon.

Unfortunately, fter over a half century, ost have succumbed to the inevitable rust cancer and the 25-horsepower (1,131-cc engine) was so underpowered, t could barely get out of its own way.

Exterior:

Refinished to a nice, river quality in all new metallic green paint with white accents, his Singlecab is beyond unique and receives thumbs up and smiles from passerby’s everywhere.

Note the dent free roof and crack free rubber seals.

Many eclectic details truly make it come alive.

Some minor rust repairs were made during the paint restoration and other surfacerust can be seen in some areas around the hinges.

California "Blue Plate" confirms theVW haslivedin a dry, outhern California climate for at least 40 years.

With only a few scuffs, cratches and minor surface rust, here is absolutely no evidence of abuse here.

With the 3 gates folded down, he truck bed is exposed and is in remarkable condition.

Also makes fora perfect work bench. What a great looking bed!

How about a peek inside the treasure chest?

The spacious downstairs cargo compartment with locking door is bone dry, ust free and very spacious.

Sparewheel and tire included.

Speaking of wheels and tires, ainted white steelies with baby moon hub caps are factory correct as well.

Just the wobbly bias ply tires have been exchanged with radial tires in the size 195/70R14 on all four corners.

While we’re down on one knee, et’s take a close look at the undercarriage.

Singlecab’s undercarriage is nearly virginal, hich is almost a miracle, iven what many VW T1s look like after over 50 years of road use.

Very important: pictures of the underneath: Everything is bone dry; with only minor surface rust.

Clearly, his Pickup hasn't been exposed to inclement weather much, nd the condition of the floors gives ample testimony to this fact.

A dry climate, alifornia truck is so much easier to live with!

New 3 passenger, ench seat cover is as original and as close to new as possible, ith no rips, tains, pen seams, r other imperfections to report.

Pilot and co-pilot find a stock cockpit that emphasizes VW's no-nonsense, ess-is-more approach.

There's the proverbial 2-spoke "Bus" steering wheel andsingle instrument.

Two easy-to-grab sticks -- shifter and e-brake handle -- in the middle of the spacious, ubber-mat covered cockpit floor.

All of this is just beautifully preserved.

Let’s have a peek inside the engine compartment.

Engine compartment, au naturel." Nothing added, othing taken away. The engine always starts and burbles happily. There's no smoke, r oil leaks. VW’s mechanical longevity and simplicity is legendary, nd this truck keeps the legend alive!

One concession to drivability has been made when this 1.6-Liter VW engine was installed.

With about 54 horses, ravel speeds of 65 miles per hour are easily obtained.

Try this with a 36-horsepower motor up a steep hill and you'll appreciate this upgrade to the fullest.

Drivability:

The Vee Dub Pickup is like a Beetle, ut with much more cabin space and much better visibility. Once seated, ou'll experience a mellow feeling. Elevated position behind the flat steering wheel makes you feel like you're the captain of a road-going ocean vessel.

The Truck runs, rives, hifts, nd breaks with assurance, ith no ill behavior of any kind. Even more amazing are the reactions of bystanders, otorists and pedestrians alike. Children point, omen wave, nd you see the faces of middle-aged folks light up when they see this relic from their past. Everybody loves this Singlecab!

It’s perfectly understandable why these T1 trucks have gained so much popularity. They are simple, ractical, urable, nd, ost importantly, imeless.

The majority of these VWs were driven into the ground and put away wet with precious few surviving the ravages of time unharmed. Finding a genuine, inglecab today is almost as unlikely as winning the lottery. Survivor trucks like this one are skyrocketing in value and will continue to do so!
