Superb & Rare low mileage 1989 CX 25 Diesel TRD Turbo II 120 hp

Because Ebay does not recognize European VIN, I listed the car as a 1980. Please note that is a 1989.

I purchased this low mileage CX 25 TRD Turbo II from its 2nd owner in the Loire valley region of France this summer. I was looking for a similar model I had previously sold earlier this year (see video above) and was lucky to find this lower mileage, newer model year CX. I always try to buy the best example of cars I personally like.

The car was sold new in Paris as shown in the original delivery book and remained with its original owner for 26 years. The second owner from whom I bought it only kept the car for less than one year (he had a heart attack and decided to sell once he recovered).

This rare Turbo II version features the 120 hp turbo diesel engine, which made this car the fastest diesel sedan in the world at the time with a top speed of over 120 mph. This is not a slow car and I have surprised many drivers while merging on the highway ! Furthermore, it is quite economical.

Factory fuel economy numbers:

Road (55 mph): 33.1 mpg
Highway (80 mph): 28.4 mpg
City: 22.8 mpg

This CX TRD is equipped with the VIP package, which includes most options offered at the time such as 4 power windows, power mirrors, specific upholstery and door cards, rare dual headlights, rear shades as well as air conditioning.

I have receipts for work done in 2015 and 2016 and within the last 2,600 miles, in addition to the work done in the past month which include the following:

- New timing belt
- Rebuilt injection pump
- Gas tank cleaning & filter change
- New suspension accumulator sphere
- New CV boots
- New outer tie rods
- 4 new tires
- New brake accumulator sphere
- Parking brake adjustment
- Upper motor mount
- Shifter bushings (makes all the difference !) & shifter rods
- AC drier & recharge R12. No leaks
- Motor oil & filter

This CX TRD is ready to go and needs absolutely nothing. It drives extremely well and feels super smooth. The faster you go, the more you feel the floating-magic-carpet aspect of the hydraulic suspension going over bumps and expansion joints like they are not even there ! The Diravi system (steering wheel centers itself back after a turn) works perfectly as does the self-leveling suspension. The car accelerates swiftly, stops straight and strong and has nice precise shifting thanks to the new rods and bushings.

The interior is in fantastic condition, including all glass, carpets, seats, trim, etc..

Please note that I choose to retain R12 gas for the AC for better efficiency. As a result, and as shown in the video below, the air is really cold dipping below 40 degrees…

A look while driving.

The car was legally imported in August of 2016 under the 25 year old NHTSA exemption rule. This car is absolutely legal in the US and is sold with a valid Florida title.

Driving by:

This Citroen does not have any rust and I would classify it as being a very upper quality driver, or on the collectible scale of 1 to 6, a 2. The paint is in excellent condition and appears to be all original with no signs of repaint / re-spray. A few rock chips are present toward the front of the hood and the fuel door has a dent. Also, for unknown reason, some type of repair was done in the rear left passenger door sill (photo).
All the chrome trim is also in excellent condition and is not pitted. Everything functions properly (even the center dash digital displays for engine temperature, clock and outside temperature). Although, typical of CX’s from this era, the center storage plastic doors hinges are broken. Also, the tachometer (RPM) needle acts erratically sometimes. I changed the flywheel sensor to no effect and did not investigate further as it does not affect anything and it does not bother me.

Please note that because this is a European car, the odometer and speedometer are in km. I will leave the original French plates on the car for more authenticity.

This car is ready to go in exceptional comfort and smoothness. If you are like me and like to drive something different with good fuel economy, comfort and style then this CX should be on your list. It could be kept in a collection or be an ideal daily driver for long commutes. It is a wonderful example of a Classic Citroen.

Although, this Citroen CX presents very well, it is still a 28 year old car, so please do not expect a new car. Some scratches and light wear are consistent with the age and mileage of the vehicle. I show the small issue areas in the photos and walk-around video.
