Description

You've always wanted a Mustang, but by the time you were old enough to afford one, they were all priced out of reach. Well, guess again, because this bright red V8-powered 1968 Mustang convertible hits all the right notes with a surprisingly reasonable bottom line. You don't need a big block or racing stripes to have a lot of fun in a Mustang ragtop. The fire-breathing V8 muscle that we expect today is a legend created by a select few, while a great majority of Mustang buyers were perfectly content to motor around in cars just like this one, and the 302 is plenty potent, don't worry about that. With a bright code T Candyapple Red paint job, it sure looks the part of first-class summertime fun, but it hasn't been over-restored, modified, or converted to some kind of tribute to something it never was in the first place. The bodywork is quite straight, and it sure looks like this car has lived all its life without experiencing the misery of winter weather, and while the paint is older with some touch-ups, you'll enjoy putting a coat of wax on it next Saturday. You'll also be pleased to show this one off, because the chrome is good, all the badges are intact, and the grille is excellent, so you need to do exactly nothing to get it ready to cruise. The handsome black interior has a few liberties taken, but you'll appreciate them the moment you put the top down in the sun. Dark red inserts have been added to the door panels and the steering column has been painted to match, so there's some relief from the all-black look. But other than those little details, the interior is remarkably stock, including some very nice bucket seats, correctly fitted carpets, and an upscale 2-spoke steering wheel. Even the standard models got a pretty complete array of gauges, all of which are in original condition with clear lenses and bright markings. The top of the back seat shows some wear, but that's the nature of convertibles and it's balanced by a new AM/FM stereo radio. It isn't trying too hard like a lot of other Mustangs you'll see, it just looks ready to play. However, it does have a few pleasant surprises, including a correct trunk mat and a matching boot bag. There's also a nice-fitting black convertible top that's so easy to fold, it doesn't matter that it's manual. For years, the 302, AKA the 5.0, has been a mainstay of Mustang performance. This same engine worked well in late-model Mustangs, and with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor and intake manifold, it's peppy around town with a nice grumble to the exhaust. It has been recently dressed up with Ford Motorsport black valve covers and air cleaner, plus Ford Blue paint on the block. There's an aluminum radiator up front and power steering makes it easy to handle around town. Even more important is the tidy chassis, which includes new control arms and ball joints up front, so it feels quite tight. The C4 3-speed automatic transmission feeds a set of highway-friendly 3.20 gears, and with a small block V8 up front, the ride is comfortable and braking secure. Beautiful styled steel wheels are framed by a set of 225/60/15 whitewall radials that have a lot of life left in them.Find out what early Mustang owners already knew: the 302 is a great choice.
