1972 Jeep Commando Jeepster Base 5.0 304 AMC Spring-Overed New Soft Top & Seats

This is a great `72 Jeep Commando with a strong-running AMC 304, GM TH-350 3-speed automatic transmission, nd a military m38a1 transfer case. You can see video of it running by searching YouTube for user atswatisedyu. It fires right up and runs very strong. It does run and drive and is currently licensed, ut it could use some this and that. It's a strong driver project. I have another 4x4 (Scout) that I've had forever and that I already have so much more money into, o I decided I don't need two 4x4's.
The soft top is a new Bestop. Both front bucket seats are new, ow back seats. The passenger seat tips forward, he drivers just has the front-back slide adjustment. No back seat. There is some non-structural rust...some pretty good in the rockers which are also a little beat up. Gives it character. Structurally it is sound. I fiberglassed the pans just in the bucket (not the bed) and bed-coated the floor. Pans were a little swiss-cheesey in the foot area but not too bad. Seat bases were blasted, rimed and painted red.
This is spring-overed (axle-undered) giving about 8" of lift. This was done by my friend who I acquired this from. It's not the prettiest welding job, ut it's been through some stuff so I'm pretty confident it's solid. Transmission is good and shifts firmly. This has a factory boxed frame. Some trim work was also done to the sheet metal on the lower rear quarters for some added clearance. I think the tires are 31.5" on 15" wheels.
The heater/defroster works high and low. The wipers work high and low but are a little tired/slow. The headlights and tail lights work.The turn signals and brake lights don't work. I've been using hand signals when I drive it. The led tail lights are new-ish....I think the problem is in the brake switch and the blinker arm has obvious issues.
One of the front springs is sagging a bit and could use a shim or new springs. The power steering gear and pump are supposed to work, ut the high pressure hyd hose failed and was never replaced. I've been driving w/o power steering. The gas pedal pivot needs to be replaced--right now there is just the rod that the pedal pushes which does work fine for driving. Gas pedal is in the glove box. There are no mufflers...she's running straight pipes at the moment. I was planning to replace the exhaust...
This does come with the hard top which is in pretty good, traight shape and has all of the glass. Many of the attachment points are missing though, o it would need a little work to use it again. I've driven with the hardtop on, ut there were a couple of bungy cords involved. For travel it could be reattached safely enough to get it home. (All fasteners on front edge are present and a few others.) It would be better if there is room on your trailer to lay the top down. The doors are quickly removable with lift-out hinge pins. (i.e. bolts that are missing the nuts on the bottom..)
The column shifter for the trans is kind of sloppy. It works, ut a nice and easy floor shifter would probably be a good thing. The window regulators are crap. They will roll the windows up and down though. There are 6x9 cut-outs in the kick by the back seat. See the video for more detail. Also this needs an overflow reservoir for the radiator. I have been running it as-is with a simple overflow and just top it now and then.
Yes, n theory you could drive this home. I would highly recommend trailering it though. It does drive smoothly at 60 mph and tracks well, ut I wouldn't drive more than 50 or so miles w/o a good going over everything. This has been parked in my garage/storage and started only occasionally the past 3 years or so. Plus with the spring over it's kind of like riding on a marshmallow....there are no sway bars etc. I think the gas gauge does work, ut I haven't taken it to either limit lately. The gas tank is newer but the filler is just a piece of large fuel hose...it should be replaced with the proper fitted piece.
A couple of the pictures show the Jeep with the older buckets and a big bumper that was on there. Those are not included, or is the motorcycle in the back. The bumper is now on my Scout. I didn't get a more recent pic of the passenger side for some reason...probably sun. It looks the same as in the earlier pics...better than the driver side. Right now the weather is iffy and there can be snow/ice on the roads, o I would avoid trying to drive it home. Please count on needing a trailer or a vehicle shipper. I can help coordinate with shipper on this end. Or I can store this for you until spring ~April so long as payment is taken care of sooner.
That about does it. Great project, 've just got too many....though I will consider trades for Harley Davidson. Reserve is set low and fair. $500 deposit within 48 hours of auction end, emainder payable in cash at pick-up within 2 weeks or so....I'm easy. Jeep is located in Bayfield, olorado.
