1952 Riley RMF Saloon, ight Hand Drive
I recently bought this old beauty because I had one just like it when I lived in Germany in the early sixties, hile I was in the U.S. Army. It was delivered last month, ut my left ankle which I broke many years ago, et me know that I should no longer drive cars with a standard transmission, o I am putting it up for sale.
All things considered, t is in quite wonderful condition for a 64 year old car, nd has a handsome color combination of black and dark green. The car is quite rare, ut it is quite complete, ith all of its original bits! I had been told by the past owner that the car was completely original, ut after contacting the Riley RME Club, hich I was a member of in the early sixties, learned the following: The car had been damaged in an accident in the early seventies, as professionally rebuilt and repainted with a two-part paint. The odometer shows just a bit less than 43,000 miles, hich may or may not be correct, ut from all that I am able to determine, t may be correct.
The exterior bodywork could have been better done as there are rust areas at the trailing edge of the trunk lid, nd along the right side of the body above and aft of the rear door. There are other areas of concern on the left side near the vent. The fenders (wings) are all in very sound condition. I have tried to take pictures of the various areas of potential rust/repair areas, hat I would have done if I were to keep the vehicle. The paint, lthough shiny, s not perfect as there are small areas of chipping and other marks. Again, f I were to keep the car, would have all of the paint stripped, he bodywork done with welded-in sheet metal, nd a new repaint. The chrome is in remarkable condition, ut there are a few bits that could be re-chromed because of pitting. The tires, attery and spare are also quite good. The lights all work, lthough the turn-signals have been modified to work from a small flip-switch located to the right of the dash. The dashboard gauges all seem to work properly, ut the clock does not. The dashboard has been split on both sides of the center panel, ut could be repaired and strengthened with a proper gluing and reinforcement on the back side. The steering wheel is damaged at the spline/wheel intersections, nd could be repaired, ut an early Triumph TR3 wheel is almost identical. Reproduction wheels are readily available!
It seems to run well, ut it could certainly use a good tune-up. The interior is in reasonably good condition, lthough the driver's seat would need a bit of repair as two of the seams have split. The headliner is in wonderful original condition, ut the door panels have seen better days, lthough the rear panels are in decent, riginal condition. The carpeting has been replaced. The vinyl top is in very good condition, ut I do not know if it is original or a replacement.
The following copy comes from the British president of the Riley RM Club, here the car is known in the Riley RM Club by its license plate number.
"ORO 453 first came to light in our RM Club area on Tuesday 18th October 1988. The car had then recently been re-sprayed (using what was then the firsttime I had seen 2 -pack paint used, t looked immaculate. ) after havingbeen the subject of a long rebuild, here (I was told) most of the timberframe had been replaced with steel, fter the car had been involved in anaccident. In the mid 90's it was sold to another local member, ho had the misfortuneto blow the engine and it was moved and store, nused for a few years. Itthen changed hands again, still not in use) going to another local memberwho sadly became ill and passed away, efore being bought by a guy who askedme to rebuild an engine for him, o replace the original. He eventuallytransferred an engine from another RMF ( think) and sold it on. I recall itbeing for sale in the R.Memoranda. It changed hands a couple of times beforebeing sold to the USA. In recent times it has been mentioned on the RM Club Forum."
The following copy is from "Sports Car Digest" article describing this specific vehicle when it was owned by a man in Texas.
"For a well-used and sixty year old British car, t actually seems to be in very good order. The clock doesn't work and there are parts of the interior that could use some life pumped back into them, ut all the gauges are said to work and the car tracks straight. On the outside, he vinyl roof is in good order and the finish of black with green inlets running down the sides is very pretty. The seller is also 6'3", o for all the tall drivers out there, ave no fear. Rileys are an interesting but certainly not obvious choice for classic car shoppers, o for those who are looking for an old British car that's just a little different, his old RMF is worth a look."
