Aimed to compete with their Japanese all-wheel drive rivals. the Subaru STI and Mitsubishi EVO; Mazda built the Speed 6. Featuring a very similar platform to their rivals Mazda gave their standard sedan the Mazda 6 a high-performance turbo charged engine and all-wheel drive. The 2. 3L turbo MZR engine produces 274hp and 280lb-ft. which is more than adequate to match the competition. From 2006 to 2008 this engine was awarded with Ward’s 10 Best Engines too. Unfortunately production only lasted from 2005 till 2007 worldwide; North American production numbers are believed to be around 10. 00. The production number debate is caused from a transport ship capsizing on its way to deliver Speed 6’s to North America; Mazda never officially released how many were lost.
