The symbol of "SL". synonymous with "Gullwing" and both pure Mercedes-Benz. The W113 Chassis or "Pagoda" cars as they are often referred to were produced from 1963-1971. They are considered the true start of the high volume SL as we know it today. and more importantly the last of the hand-built Mercedes-Benz. As such. they offer a sophisticated driving experience compared to their contemporaries. and are cherished today amongst the collector car community as a must-have and a very sensible investment. The original W113 design was the 230SL. introduced in 1963 with the crisp. angular Paul Bracq styling and “Pagoda” removable hardtop. which would become the models signature. The original 150-horsepower six-cylinder grew in size over the decade. with the ultimate model being the 280SL with the 180-horsepower. 2. 8-liter engine. introduced in 1968 and built through 1971. The 280SL was the most popular W113. accounting for 23. 85 cars. Of those 23. 85 280SLs produced.
