The term muscle car did not come into play until well after WWII and basically it is defined as putting the largest engine from a Detroit automotive manufacture into the much smaller car of the manufacturer to get the best of both world. that being lots of horse power in a light weight body. That was the basic formula for fast cars in the United States after the war and the 1950 Oldsmobile 88 is the first Detroit “poster child” for a muscle car. The car you see before you has Oldsmobile’s first V8 designed for the large Oldsmobile 98 and put into the smaller bodied Oldsmobile 88. Eventually every Detroit manufacturer used this formula and most Detroit manufacturers didn’t catch on to using this idea until the early 1960s. The next point that needs to be made about the car in this ad is that after the war. It is also much better looking then the convertible as the hard top lines add to the flow of the overall design. Also in 1950 General Motors was again playing with very unusual exterior color schemes. including two tone colors. This car has one of the original and best color two tone color schemes for this model Alder Green with Black top. Now you say you are starting to see a formula for what is becoming a fantastic collector’s car. Small body. big engine. 2-door hardtop in a gorgeous color scheme. How could you possibly top that off?
