Michigan plant this 1961 Oldsmobile 98 is a rare example being of only 3. 04 original examples of which less than half are believed to exist today. Quite superior to the rest of the Oldsmobile line up the 98 was the top of the line model and equipped with all power options standard. This vehicle had underwent a full frame off restoration in the late 90’s and has been well cared for since. The car is in excellent running condition all power options work as they should and represents a very presentable example. Having some aged since its restoration. the car has been driven and shows some signs of road use with a few nicks and chips but nothing major. The interior is nice. seats are like new as is the top. The vehicle is finished in its original colors of Provincial White with a Garnet Metallic trim line. The interior is the code 385 red. the top is Garnet. Original drivetrain is in excellent condition it is equipped with a 394/325hp high compression engine at 10. 1. all its power a luxury equipment includes Power Steering and Brakes. Power Top and Power Seat. wonder bar radio and power antenna. The vehicle is an exceptional driver in good condition it could benefit from some minor refreshing to its rubber trim pieces and carpet over all it is fabulous car to own and enjoy. Oldsmobile History for 1961 Cars GM lines in 1961. for the most part. exemplified the new. cleaner. lower. longer. wider look that was just coming into fashion. Simple. twin. round combination tail/stop/directional lights enhanced the rocketlike styling as did the tapered rear fender styling. The flamboyant fins of the fifties were all but gone from GM’s lineup. except Cadillac which would hold onto them for just a few more years. The very first Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight appeared for model year 1941. The series name would continue to signify the top-of-the-line. flagship model for the next fifty-eight years. the last issues being built for the 1999 model year. Super 88s may have been ‘super’ but the Ninety-Eight was always the creme de la creme of the Oldsmobile fleet. Typically riding a longer wheelbase with an appropriately greater overall length. the Ninety-Eight had a more powerful engine than the base level Eighty-Eight and as one might expect. a host of appearance and convenience features that were optional. at extra cost. on Eighty-Eight and Super 88 models. The privileged few (roughly one in six full size Oldsmobiles for 1961 were Ninety-Eight models) paid at least $4. 72 for the opportunity– an additional $1. 00. 00 or thirty-three percent up-charge for the prestige of Ninety-Eight ownership. That was quite a hefty premium considering that the base price of a base model Eight-Eight was only $2. 56. 00 at the time. All full size Oldsmobiles for 1961 shared the same 6. 46 liter (that’s 394 cubic inches) cast iron. V-8 engine 325 horsepower Rocket V-8 one of a continuing series of ‘Rocket V-8s’ designed by Charles Kettering. father of the ‘modern day. high compression V-8 engine. His designs included a number of interesting features including overhead valves. hydraulic lifters. oversquare bore-stroke ratio. forged crank with counterweights. aluminum pistons. full-floating wrist-pins. and a dual plane intake manifold. The 1961 engine was badged the ‘Skyrocket’ V-8. Consumers of top-of-the-line models. like the Olds Ninety-Eight. expected creature comfort. performance and convenience amenities. typically optional at extra cost on lesser models. to be included as standard equipment on their ‘highline’ models. Offered in five body styles including three 4-door models. a 2-door convertible and the coupe shown above. the ‘Classic’ Ninety-Eight for Sixty-One. didn’t let them down.
