1963 Studebaker Daytona Hardtop I bought the car in 2008. It had spent most of its life in the Sacramento. A area. I drove it back to my home in the LA area with the intent of a complete restoration that would include mild updating to make it a comfortable daily driver. I pulled the drivetrain. stripped all the chrome. glass and interior and turned it over to a professional body shop. They took it to bare metal. cut out any rust spots and welded in new sheet metal. The trunk was rusted in the rear left corner so the shop installed a complete reproduction trunk floor panel from Classic Enterprises in Wisconsin. There is no bondo anywhere in the car. The bumpers were in good condition and did not need to be rechromed. The grille is new old stock. I deleted the Daytona side trim for a more updated look. The paint is base/clear Avanti White (P-6331). The stock seats were rebuilt completely then reupholstered. The recliners were rebuilt with kits from Studebaker International. The door panels are fabricated custom. The door lock set was new from SI as well. The interior and trunk carpet was custom cut and fit to the car. The headliner was replaced with the original style perforated fabric. The 1964 instrument panel was dyed black and includes a NOS speedo and a Stewart Warner tach. All the gauges work but the fuel gauge reads 5/8 when full and is empty when showing 1/8. It will likely require a new sending unit to be more accurate. The temperature gauge operation was verified with a laser thermometer at the water pump outlet. The door locks and trunk release have been converted to remote power with two fobs. Included with the car is a cruise control kit that I never got around to installing as well as a spare power lock kit. The stereo is a Kenwood with 8 speakers (rear deck. under-seat subs. custom mounted kick-panel and dash mounted tweeters) with a trunk-mounted power amp. It also has a Sirius Satellite receiver (included). There is a traffic receiver power cable run through the dash for a Garmin GPS (GPS not included). The brakes were updated with a power booster and dual master cylinder. The brakes themselves are 4-wheel disk from Jim Turner. The radiator is a new 4-row Aluminum model from Jegs with a fan/clutch assembly from an Avanti and an electric fan for backup cooling. The temp sensor is set at 180º and located in the water pump manifold at the outlet to the radiator. There is a manual override for the electric fan under the dash so it can be turned on in case of sensor failure but the gauge has never indicated overheating. Battery is a gel type. The alternator is a 100 amp. chrome GM style. The power steering components were rebuilt and new hoses were installed. The 259 V8 was rebuilt with a . 030 overbore. The rotating assembly was balanced professionally. The motor has around 15. 00 miles on the rebuild and runs extremely well. There is an oil leak from the pan that I have not addressed. It has used Mobil1 10W40 since break in. It has chromed rocker covers and Avanti headers feeding 2 1/2” dual exhaust with Flowmasters - excellent sound. It has an electric fuel pump with an oil pressure safety shutoff. The carburetor is an Edelbrock 500 CFM 4-barrel jetted using an air/fuel meter (there is a port welded into the right side exhaust below the header to accept an O2 sensor). There is a fuel pressure gauge mounted on the carb inlet. Transmission is a Borg Warner Powershift automatic. The rear end is the stock Dana 44 Twin Traction (positraction). It has a 1” rear anti sway bar from Dave Thibeaux installed. The stock front anti sway bar is included but not installed. The wheels are 15” chrome dish from Jegs to clear the calipers. with Michelin radials. A new old stock wiring harness was installed. The car was built as a daily driver and I used it as such for a few years before I moved out of the country. Nothing on the car was modified to the point that it can’t be put back to stock easily if desired with the exception of the cutout for the modern stereo. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive this car across the country tomorrow. The car comes with a box of random spares and goodies like new front coil springs for a stiffer ride. shop manual and parts books. lots more.
