This Scout has a unique history and has been well cared for. While it does have some undercarriage rust that needs attention. it is in relatively good condition for being a regularly driven Scout of its age. I am the third owner and used it as my daily driver for two years. The previous owner had it for about a year and replaced the stereo and speakers with a vintage-style Bose system and equalizer - the rest of the interior is original. The car originally belonged to Glenn Kahle. former V. P. of International Harvester Agricultural Equipment Engineering (1980-1989). It was driven by his wife for the 30+ years they owned it. It has never been off-road and the travel top has never been removed. The car was repainted in 1993. at which point the quarter panels were replaced with fiberglass. That same year it won 2nd place in its class in the Scout Nationals. Its factory original equipment includes: power steering. 1979 steering wheel. power brakes. tilt wheel. A/C (functioning system. but not converted and not charged currently). Dana 20 2-speed transfer case. Lock-O-Matic auto locking 4x4 hubs. rear sliding quarter windows. chrome front and rear bumpers. deluxe exterior trim and custom interior. which includes bucket seats and a center console in place of the standard bench seat. Mileage (99. 40) is original. When I purchased the car in 2012 I did a considerable amount of work on the engine to replace aging parts. many of which were original to the car and no longer functioning to their fullest capacity. This included replacing the rear main seal. valve cover gasket. master cylinder. oil sending unit. exhaust. tie rod ends. and some brake and heater hoses. as well as rebuilding the carburetor. The car still has its original copper radiator. which has been patched once and is in good condition. The 4WD is in excellent working condition and drives through snowy conditions with ease. While it is not currently a pressing issue. the front wheel bearings will need to be repacked at some point. I also recently had the transmission serviced to tighten some seals that were starting to age. This has resolved a very small leak for the time being. but the seal may need to be replaced before too long. It is an eye-catching. fun car to drive. and with a little work to remediate rust on the undercarriage and body it could be an excellent car for a collector.
