Description

1934 Schafer Indy Racer open wheel STREET LEGAL roadster. Painstakingly built up from the remnants of a 1930's Schafer body(nine pieces) and using the original rusted out frame as a guide. This is a recreation of the shortened cut down car that was undoubtedly used as a circuit racer after it's Indy days were over.

The car was built up with the "Great Race" in mind but by the time it was finished he thought better of the 5K entry fee and the 9 day commitment plus the chase vehicleect.

The Boat tailed racer uses a straight 6 inline 292 GMC truck engine with tons of torque mated to a 3 speed automatic for a very pleasant driving experience. ( the original used a three speed crash box) Four sets of semi elliptical springs are fitted with custom Bilstein shocks make for a real sports car ride.

Registered and titled in Mass. as a 1934 Schafer Roadster it is exempt from needing fenders (pre 1940) it should be legal anywhere. however I do have a set of four fenders as well as the pictured side engine louver panels although lately I've driving with the engine exposed without them.

Fitted with a heavy duty radiator this car runs cool and will sit in traffic or a parade with NO overheating worries. This is the only car in thestorage facility that starts up first time ever spring! (heated storage always and obviously always garaged as there is no top. The car starts first time every time!

This car get loads of attention and has become famousin Boston with hundreds of people taking pictures ect.

At the cars shows it always attracts a crowd and has won several awards at local shows in addition to awards at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Boston. It was also exhibited at the prestigiousinvitation only "Boston Cup" show on Boston Common in October this year.

This Racer would be an ideal for fast country roads sadly it lives in downtown Boston !

The car has hydraulic discs up front disguised as drum brakes and drums in the rear to haul it down from speed.Although they are not power brakes so require a firm pressure.... body is all steel and the paint is very good with a few minor blemishes and a light patina.

High speed Coker radial tires further enhance the driving experience and even though it will squeak the tires in all three gears the tire are too expensive to make that a regular habit ! The tires are new with less than 200 miles on them. The frame is heavy wall rectangular tube construction with heavy cross members and motor mounts. Offenhauser intake manifold with 3 Rochester carbs and a moderately loud exhaust 3 inches in diameter. 17 Inch wires wheels and Brooklands style windscreen.

In short this is a great car to show and drive anywhere the weather permits I have driven it only a few hundred mile a year and enjoy every mile especially when I take it for a rare day into the mountains of NH. Very easy to work on the only thing that needs attention is the non working speedometer, therwise it's routine maintenance an polishing ! This is not a fussy car to own and is extremely well sorted out. Call with any questions. Best regards Paul 617 834-9354
