1989 BMW 635CSiRare 5-Speed with Limited Slip Rear Differential1 of 61 Produced in 1989
The '89 635CSi is the last model produced in the E24 series since the first sixer rolled out of the factory over a decade earlier. There were only 61 of this particular model manufactured with the 5-speed gearbox in 1989. I'm assuming all of the 5-speeds produced that year had LSDs, ut this one has the 3.73 LSD (perhaps the rear differential of choice), as been extremely well kept, nd it's Zinnoberrot Red.
Every criticism or aspect of the E24 series that was ever ridiculed had been taken care of by the time the final 635CSi models left the factory. The 1988-89 635CSi remains the enthusiast sixer of choice. This particular model is the finest E24 635CSi ever produced with all the bells and whistles including plenty of power, uperior handling, nd the ability to turn heads wherever it goes and regardless of what vehicle is ahead or trailing. The collectors market for the E24s has been slow to emerge but has seen a recent surge in new interest mainly due to exposure on the internet and the resurfacing of wonderfully kept sixers that owners are displaying and some finally letting go of after 20+ years. While the M635CSi is the vehicle of choice among collectors who want a garage ornament, he M6 wasn't built to be driven (as a daily driver) like its 635CSi counterpart with the slightly lower compression M30 engine requiring far less maintenance.
Features:
Replaced/New within last 10k miles:
What's the Central Locking Unit? When the master key is used at the driver side door, assenger side door, r trunk, oth doors, runk, nd fuel door can all be locked or unlocked.
OBC? Has features for average miles per gallon, vg mph, imer, utdoor temp, tc. A code can also be entered to prevent the vehicle from starting in the event of attempted theft.
Electronic Check Control System? This safety feature alerts you to mechanical/safety/brake/cooling/lighting system issues before you find out the hard way. This was a very innovative feature included on even the early E24s.
Cooled Icebox? Between the rear seats their is a compartment that is cooled by the rear A/C system and securely holds three aluminum cans.
Cosmetically the car looks amazing from 10 feet away. Within a couple feet, ou begin to see some evidence of the miles that have been put on the car, rimarily small chips in the nose area and front spoiler which are unavoidable. There are a few other imperfections in the paint/body noted above. The minor rust areas remain superficial, ut again, 'm in AZ; if you will be in a humid climate, ou might need to address these areas in a few years. Other than that, he front of the side mirrors are a bit faded. The interior is clean and in very good condition. The driver seat is a bit worn on the left-hand side with a seam coming apart on the seat bottom that needs to be re-stitched, nd one small tear that needs to be repaired near the left shoulder area. The rest of the leather is in great shape; rear seats are like new. The dash has a few small cracks that have begun near the defrost vents; I couldn't prevent the inevitable. I have many many additional pics I can forward including those of the cosmetic issues. I could have fixed every little detail, ut the new owner needs to make the car their own.
I purchased the vehicle 9 years ago from a foreign car fanatic in Minneapolis and drove it back to Arizona in two days with absolutely no problems except for getting pulled over by a highway patrolman. Thought I was in big trouble when he had me take a seat in his patrol car... but he proceeded to tell me how much he loved the old 6-series BMWs so we talked sixers for a few minutes then he sent me on my way with a warning. The car demands respect and those who know always grace you with a compliment. Despite the urge to install a turbo, nd swap in other aftermarket parts, 've managed to keep this car as it was when new except for installing the 3.73 LSD.
When I bought it in 2007, he previous owner said:
I have to sell it because I just added a Jaguar to my collection and don't have time to drive both the Jag and the BMW. I would love to keep it, ut a car like this deserves to be driven and was never meant to collect dust. The car has been garaged its entire life and the vast majority of its miles have been on the freeway (this was at 141k miles), ncluding the original and previous owner in Texas. No major repairs or bodywork has every been necessary. Everything is original except for shocks, reaks, -134a conversion, lutch, nd regular maintenance items. And, f a repair is ever needed, ecause the E24s have become very popular, here are many companies that now supply each and every E24 part from bumper to bumper.
There wasn't much that he said that I could argue with. Now, fter putting just over 106k miles on the car myself, ven though I thought I would never ever let this car go, too am faced with a new addition (a baby boy). And my commute is now only 2 miles one way to and from work, sually via mountain bike. So I won't have the time, r the room to give this car the respect it deserves, nd I'd prefer someone else have the oportunity to keep her on the road rather than me having it sit here, nly to watch it collect dust. I can say that I have kept the tradition of keeping it garaged and out of the elements, nd nearly all of the miles I have put on her have been on the freeway/highway... that's why I bought it. I had a 100 mile round trip to work each day through the open road on one of Arizona's most scenic highways. I couldn't have picked a better car as a daily driver.
Only existing and new BMW enthusiasts who intend to drive and maintain this E24 need bid. I have the vehicle listed for sale locally and elsewhere so there is the possibility that the auction could be cancelled. Also, 'm keeping the original BMW emblems as amemento. New shiny emblems are already on her and ready to go.
247,957 miles (I expect that the mileage may increase a little by the end of the auction with a test drive or two)

- Slight rust in some of the usual suspect areas. Rust has not progressed since the car has been in AZ, ut may need some attention if taken to a humid climate or driven often in wet weather. I can email pics of all cosmetic imperfections.
- A/C Compressor has a leak (slight but a leak nonetheless) and needs to be replaced. I found this out after replacing the seals for the rear A/C. Approximately $800 for new compressor install and charge with R-134a refrigerant. Otherwise, /C system is sound and ice cold, ven in Arizona. A/C technicians were impressed when they recharged the system after seals were replaced, hen I found a leak at the compressor so we evacuated the system to recaptured the refrigerant. If it were summer, 'd already have a new compressor in it.
- Bushings for gear shift aretemperamental below 20 degrees F until car has warmed up.
- Power Steering Assist does not activate until system has warmed up.
- One gauge cluster illumination bulb is out
- The OBC backlight is out
- Next oil change due at 253k miles (use synthetic if driven rarely, onventional if driven frequently). Recently I have used synthetic since I'm putting very few miles on the car now. With synthetic, ou will get a few very slow oil leaks. I didn't have any with conventional.
- Valve Adjustment should also be checked at 253k miles (every 6k miles). Very rarely need adjusting.
- Front Rotors will need replacing within next 5k miles (break pads as well)
- Tire tread is low
- K&N Air filter needs to be cleaned and re-oiled at regular intervals depending upon your driving conditions.
- I've got a few extra miscellaneous parts and fluids, nd the front license plate mount if your state requires a front plate.
What's the Central Locking Unit? When the master key is used at the driver side door, assenger side door, r trunk, oth doors, runk, nd fuel door can all be locked or unlocked.
