Description

Same owner 24 years, new transmission, strong engine
This model is the L6, located in Hermosa Beach. This is the premium version of the 635 csi. I have owned this car for 24 years -- I bought it in 1992 with about 70,000 miles. This was our primary car back then. But when we bought a new car in 1999 this BMW became our back up car. We drive it at least once or twice a week to keep it a “driver.” It’s always been covered in our mild California climate. Smog check and registration renewal completed September, 2015 so it’s all smog tested and paid up through November 2016.

The odometer broke in 2003 at 108,444, but it has only been driven about 5,000 more miles, which can be demonstrated by looking at the tire wear on the tires that I bought in 2005 (dated receipt available). See photo of tread and the new wheels I upgraded to at the same time. So this car has about 113,000 miles on it. But my word is all you have to back that up, and my 736 eBAY transactions with 100% feedback rating.

In 2011 the transmission started slipping, so Pacific Sports Cars in Manhattan Beach (who has maintained this car for 20 years) did a complete analysis of this car’s health to determine if spending the $2,600 on a rebuilt transmission was warranted. Engine analysis and compression test proved that the engine was strong. So I had the transmission rebuilt. I have all the service and maintenance records for this car.

ENGINE

Runs well, serviced regularly. Over the years many things have been replaced including fuse box, starter, water pump, the si board, fuel pump, hoses, catalytic converter, muffler, steering box, alternator, and new battery in 2013. Engine drips one or two drops of oil now and then, but I always park it in the same place and the amount of oil lost is visibly very tiny over these many years.

TRANSMISSION

Excellent condition automatic transmission, rebuilt in 2011 ($2,600). Smooth operation in all modes. Like new. Very low miles on new trans.

INTERIOR

Headliner and dash in good shape. Dash beginning to crack, but minor. Some tears and cracks in original seat leather. I installed seat covers when I first bought this car so they’ve been protected, but the leather is definitely worn and torn a little. Tools missing from trunk kit.

PAINT AND BODY

No rust. Body straight. No accidents. Paint is in good condition with some small chips and normal wear. I see one tiny bubble developing on the sunroof, and there are some small paint imperfections but cosmetically it is average, and about what you’d expect from a 30 year old car.

WHEELS AND TIRES

Tread wear about 70% remaining (see picture). New wheel upgrades. Spare rim in trunk but no tire on rim.

SUSPENSION AND BREAKS

Breaks redone including master cylinder, and suspension has been repaired including suspension rods, arms, bushings, alignment.

ELECTRICAL AND ACCESSORIES

Sunroof is operational in all positions. The important gauges are operational (speedometer, temperature and fuel gauges). The tachometer and fuel economy gauges operate intermittently. Test lights, fan and heater, door and trunk auto-locks, seat controls, windshield wipers are all operational. Headlights, tail lights, break lights and turn indicators all operational. Break warning light comes on occasionally, but my mechanic says the brakes are fine and fixing this car’s minor electrical issues not worth the effort since everything is mechanically in order.

A/C – it never got cold enough for me so I stopped recharging it. I put in an aftermarket CD/radio years ago but it only works intermittently and it needs an upgrade. So count this car as having no A/C and no radio.

Since this car has minor electrical issues that create a small battery drain, I installed a thumb screw to the battery terminal that I use to disconnect the battery when I go on vacation or when the car sits more than a week, and this way I make sure the battery stays full. If you drive it every day you can just leave it connected, but it's there if you need it.

SUMMARY
This car is a good daily “driver” and is dependable. Always starts. Fun to drive. This car is registered with a replacement VIN number issued by the DMV that came with the car when I purchased in in 1992.
