Morgan Plus 4, 961
57,000 original miles since new
History, s told to me: purchased in England by NATO officer for export to Canada (hence LHD), rought over, hen stored for many years…sold in 1973 to second owner….he redid the brakes, id a complete engine rebuild…don’t know why, aybe the rings were seized from sitting? And, ventually stripped the perfect body to bare metal and did a very nice respray in its original black.
Now….chassis is excellent couldn’t find any rust or cracks. Wood too seems to be excellent….with the side sills uncovered, ne can see a prime area of potential rot that eludes the view of most Morgan buyers. Wheel wells, oor posts, n and on…all are excellent. Clearly a product of a car garaged since new.
My tests: compression was 155-160 psi in every cylinder, il pressure 50-60 psi hot, ero smoke hot of cold, uiet valves, o apparent oil leaks, arbs seem properly tuned, ll original gauges work (and they are the beautiful classic crème faced gauges), ll original crème switches, ransmission is a dream…never, n 42 years of Morgan ownership have I encountered a Moss gearbox with such good synchromesh action, o quiet in first and reverse gears, t gives me a good idea of what they were like when brand new.
Car was entirely rewired, very electrical works…horn, ipers, auge and exterior lights, tc. And the speedo and tach needles don’t bounce around as with most older English cars.
Front calipers do not leak and seem to work properly. Slight leakage from one rear wheel cylinder…both were replaced. Car starts instantly, rives like new, as a new stainless steel muffler, tops well, ery light steering (as Morgans age, ften the steering gets stiff and binds), racks straight, o rattles, eels unusually tight.
Convertible top is in very good condition and just had a new plastic rear window installed. Side curtains are also very good. As is the original chrome, indshield, ubber trim, ood floors, nd wood dashboard.
The past owner, owever, id a somewhat ‘home made’ interior that is adequate but not really that wonderful. My choice is to redo the interior in deep red leather with vinyl trim/panels as original. I enclosed a photo showing the interior color I would choose.
However, t would be a shame to offer this car with a new interior for two reasons….first, t keeps the next owner from choosing a color (tan? Red? Other?). And second, he side sill vinyl would wind up covering the incredibly perfect sill wood which, think, new owner would love ot see and confirm the excellence of his new purchase.
Hence, ar is offered with the home made interior….for $2,000 extra, e can redo the interior in a new owner’s choice of fabric and color.
Differential is quiet, adiator does not leak, xhaust is quiet, ront end (kingpins and bushings) passed ‘the wiggle test,’ tires were replaced maybe 1,000 miles ago, ngine (we were told) has covered maybe 10,000 miles and passed every test ‘as new,’ battery holds a charge, nd the paint? Just wet sanded and buffed/waxed, bsolutely gorgeous.
Morgans are great sports cars. With its Triumph TR4 engine, ery sturdy gearbox and back axle, isc brakes, ire wheels, ND most any part is available from a variety of US Morgan factory authorized dealers. Allowing this car’s new owner to use and enjoy his 55 year old classic at speeds up to 105 mph, or occasional or daily use, nd with no worries about keeping it going for another 55 years. Or so.
In the world of Morgans, r any other classic, ard to find a half century old car with only two owners, ery low original mileage, o bondo, o frayed old wiring, o blue smoke coming from the exhaust, o bearing noises, o wobbly front end, ulling brakes, issing key parts, nd rust and rot here and there. Hence, he next owner of this Morgan will be getting a true gem.
