1958 TRIUMPH TR3A SPORTS ROADSTER. SIGNAL RED WITH BLACK TRIM, TOP, TONNEAU, TOP BOOT. 4-SPEED. 60-SPOKE BLACK WIRE WHEELS. HEATER. FIXED STEERING WHEEL. A GEM OF AN UN-RESTORED, TWO-OWNER CALIFORNIA CAR WITH 60,186 ORIGINAL MILES. SURVIVOR CAR. FANTASTIC DRIVER.
Offered for sale, from KURT TANNER MOTORCARS, is this lovely original, well-preserved California TR3A. This car was purchased locally here in Laguna Hills about a year ago from the wife of the deceased second owner. The car had been stored in her garage for over 15 years.
Itarrived at my workshop where a fresh battery was installed, the front calipers were rebuilt along with the clutch slave cylinder, with new hydraulic hoses. The S. U. carb set was rebuilt, oil changed with filter, valves adjusted, brakes bled, new vacuum advance unit installed. Also, I converted the car to wire wheels with 5 black powder-coated 60-spoke wire wheels fitted with newer and expensive Michelin XVS 165x15 radial tires, 4 new hubs, nuts, and knock-offs.
Mechanically, the car is perfect and on the button. It is the best driving TR3A I've had. The engine is willing and very strong, no exhaust smoke or noises, super oil pressure, coupled to an excellent-shifting gearbox. Brakes and suspension are excellent and safe. Steering is your standard TR3 setup: effective, but a little dead feeling. The car can be pushed really hard through every gear with a fantastic exhaust note, and is absolutely great fun to drive that way!
The body on the the car is superb. Just about 100% rustfree, save for some very slight bubbling on the driver's side dogleg area. Great shutlines. The doors just click shut. Slight push-in on the LH lower rear fender. Small ding on the RH front fender. Little dent on the spare tire cover, right hand side. Extremely honest and well-preserved original bodywork. The car had one respray in the 70's of modest quality, and is now showing some normal dings, scrapes, and touch-up.
The original trim received vinyl seat covers and a replacement black loop carpet kit at the time of the repray in the 1970's. The car amazingly still retains it's original factory soft top(yellowed plastic windows), hoodstick top boot, trunk lining materials, original rear bench seat in leather, tool rool, jack and handle, original vinyl panel kit, cockpit cappings material, rubber, etc. and includes a newer Robbins tonneau cover.
Overall, this excellent, well-preserved, low-mileage 1958 Triumph TR3A would be very hard to replace. It has enjoyed all of it's life here from new on the sunny California coast in the hands of only two careful owners with only 60,000 original miles. It has never been restored or ever taken apart and has had only one simple repaint and a partial interior retrim. It's overall original condition is rare, very attractive, and approachable. The car can be thoroughly enjoyed as it is supposed to.
