Description

For Auction: One very original partially restored 1911 Franklin 4-cylinder air cooled Model-G Touring Car. Engine #13325. The new buyer of this very rare early Franklin automobile will greatly benefit from the previous owners many hours of restoration work. Much of the most costly and difficult work is completed. Overall. this car is very original and complete with the exception of a few minor items that I will mention. The body is made of aluminum with some forged steel reinforcements. The aluminum needs some finish work. The entire frame and the body wood have been replaced with all new hard wood. The doors open and close properly. This car is loaded with brass! Each door has a very heavy cast brass sill and frame. There is a solid brass molding on the edge of the body cowl. The aluminum hood has a brass handle and heavy brass trim. The two forward hinge pivots for the engine hood are missing; these should be simple to reproduce. Both hood shelves and latches are included. they have not been restored and are not yet installed on the vehicle. The hood former is also heavy cast brass. The original wood wheels are solid but will need to be repainted. The original front wheels are 25” in diameter and have 33 x 4 tires. The original rear wheels are 24” diameter and have 33 x 4 ½ tires. The tires are like new and still have mould marks. although they have been mounted for many years; they are very pliable and they should be fine to drive on. Each wheel has an excellent original nickel plated brass Franklin script hubcap. Two original front fenders. their forged steel fender brackets. and one original rear fender and its forged steel fender bracket are included. They are unrestored and they have not been installed on the vehicle. Also pictured and included in this auction are many new reproduction sheet metal parts for the fabrication of new fenders. The front splash apron which would be located near the starting hand crank and between the front fenders is missing. This piece should not be too difficult to reproduce and is pictured in a magazine ad which has been included for your reference. Two original hinges for the slatted hardwood seat access panels are included. They are stamped “1911 G run”. One original unrestored running board splash apron is included. This piece will be an excellent pattern for fabricating both new pieces. One running board with brass and steel trim is also included. I believe that all of the brass and steel components for the other side running board are also present. Many other pieces of original brass. steel and aluminum and wood are also pictured and all of these are included in this auction. Many of these parts are from the original floor boards. There are many pieces of brass edging and mouldings for the restoration of the vehicle. As you may see in the photos. the dash board is very complete and has a lot of original brass! The dash includes the following brass items: hinged air vents. side-lamps with brackets. a hand pump which was used to pressurize the fuel tank. the carburetor richness adjusting rod with handle. the magneto switch. and a nickel plated 1915 California octagonal registered motor vehicle tag. These all complement the dash! An unrestored 50 mph brass Jones speedometer is included. This speedometer needs restoring. The mileage figure of 74. 54 miles. found in the vehicle description is the same as this speedometer reads. I have no way of knowing if this mileage is accurate. Ebay insists on the seller offering some mileage number. so I decided to use the number from the unattached Jones brass speedometer. Also included are the two brass headlights. a brass tail light. and a nickel plated brass horn. The engine appears to be 100% complete. turns over freely and feels like it has good compression. As one may see the original carburetor. magneto and exterior mechanical oil pump/reservoir are included. The original exhaust system. including the muffler. are in good condition and in their proper location. I am confident that the engine will run. if the magneto is serviced and if the fuel system is connected. The drive train is complete and assembled. The steering column is mechanically complete and functional and includes the original wood steering wheel with its brass spider. The small throttle control lever is missing from the very top of the steering column. This is a simple brass lever and could be made or adapted from a similar piece. The transmission. clutch. drive line. rear axle. and brake assembly are all in place and appear to be operable. The right side-mounted hand brake and shifting levers operate smoothly. The foot brake pedal. clutch pedal and linkage are included and functional. This vehicle is being sold as a project or for parts. No title is provided. It is sold with a bill of sale. The reserve price is very reasonable! This project will be a great opportunity for the lucky antique automobile enthusiast to finish!
