Description

Please read description and look at pictures carefully. I have tried to be as thorough and descriptive as possible in the sale of this beautiful Porsche 912. This auction is for a very rare. clean. early Short Wheel Base (SWB) 912. Title is free and clear in my name. Original paint code 6602 Polo Red. It is indeed a numbers matching motor and 5sp manual transmission. VIN #454390. Engine #744177. This was an early 1966 build with the rare 3 gauge instrument cluster. It has always passed emissions no problem. My goal with this car was to maintain and restore to become a very nice daily driver both cosmetically and mechanically. I don’t have the resources to do a full “concours” restoration. if you want a fully restored car keep looking. These cars were made to drive and enjoy without the sticker price and costly repairs of a 911. These 912’s are basically identical in every way to the 911 with the exception of the more fuel-efficient 4 cylinder motor. Same chassis. brakes. suspension and handling as the 911. This early-build 912 is a great start for someone that wants a classic daily driver or for someone who would like to take on a full-restoration. It presents very well for a driver and is ready for anything. It has literally never let me down. I would feel confident driving it anywhere. Since ownership. this car has never been driven on anything but dry roads. Its always been garaged and kept out of the elements as long as I’ve owned it. History: To my knowledge. this 912 has always lived in the dry climate of the southwest and specifically. Colorado. I’ve owned and daily driven this 912 for 3 years now and have brought it up to speed on all the maintenance and repairs that it needs in order to be a great driver. It has undergone a complete brake and suspension overhaul in the last few thousand miles. Brand new OEM brake calipers. rotors. brake pads and brake lines have been installed. Bilstein HD suspension has been fitted and the car has been professionally lowered based on corner weight with correct Toe and Camber. and professionally aligned. The car handles phenomenally well and is a joy to drive because the power doesn’t outshine the handling. to me this makes for a classically outstanding driver experience. It has been upgraded to an electronic fuel pump with toggle switch under the dash for added security. Mechanically this car functions as it should. The horn works fantastically well. The heater works great but is a little bit smelly because of the need for new push rod seals in the heater tubes. I have disconnected the heater cables/flaps (easily re-attached in just a few minutes) because I don’t really drive the car in the winter time except for the occasional cruise around the neighborhood to blow the cobwebs out. The interior is in very decent condition. The dash pad is in excellent condition with no cracks or blemishes. Unfortunately. a previous owner painted the metal portion of the dash black. I would imagine this was at the same time that it was painted Irish Green. Luckily they did a really poor job of it and it comes right now with the original red paint underneath. I spent about an hour the other night scrubbing the black paint off of the right side of the dash. It WILL come off! Look at the pictures. the entire dash was black until I spent a little bit of time and elbow grease getting the right side of the painted dash cleaned up. The area around the gauges will also clean up nicely I believe. you will just need to remove the gauges to get better access to that spot in order to uncover the ‘Polo Red’ original paint. The factory radio has been deleted by a previous owner. I assume it did come with a radio because there’s an antenna hole in the fender. I have never once felt like I wanted to listen to a stereo over the sound of that beautiful air-cooled motor. Door panels are in great condition as are the front seats that have just been rebuilt to OE specs. This included new foam (base and seat back) from Pelican Parts and new OE perforated seat fabric. I just spent $1600 on just the seats alone. I just reinstalled them this weekend. they literally have 0 miles on them and are just perfect. They are indeed the original front seats and are correct for the car. Windows move up and down as they should and the vent windows function properly as well. The rear parcel shelf needs to be rebuilt or at least have new fabric glued because the old vinyl is starting to curl up in the corners. Interior lights work as they should and the headliner is in great condition. Sun-visors are excellent. Both front and rear windows have new. OEM rubber gaskets. I believe all the glass is original except for the front windscreen that was replaced by the previous owner. The carpet is in great condition but the rubber floor mats are cracked and split around the shift console/e-brake and should probably be replaced at some point. The body is for the most part. very clean and straight. The driver side door needs a bit of adjustment to be perfect but the gaps look good front and back. I think the latch or striker pin needs to be adjusted. They have always been this way since I’ve owned the vehicle. It shuts just fine with a bit of pressure. although I must say that it certainly shuts as well as any vehicle of this age that I’ve owned. The front valence or ‘latch support panel’ has a bit of rust forming approximately 1. 5” wide. This panel can be sourced via Pelican or Restoration Designs websites for about $400 or I’m sure a good body shop could repair this with a piece of metal patch. There are a few door dings in the door skin that are very subtle and only seen in the right light. Again. I imagine a good body guy or paint-less dent removal specialist could pop these out and make these spots a bit more presentable. The car was painted Irish Green at one time in its life. There are a few small spots that you can see overspray. primarily on the front latch panel as previously mentioned. My plan was to replace this section and have a clean. rust free car but my priorities have changed recently and I won’t be able to finish the car as I would have liked. The pans were replaced at some point but not very well and not with original equipment floor pans. just patches. The front suspension pan has also been replaced and the repair is perfectly suitable. Recent maintenance includes: -Brand new Kumho tires installed on stock steelies (including new 5th tire for spare) -Previous owner powder coated the original. correct steel wheels black. They are in excellent condition. These wheels are date stamped and correct for this particular 912. The hub cabs are in “ok” condition but one of them has several small dents/dings in it. -Bilstein HD suspension in the front. I have not replaced the rear shocks because they feel great still. Unknown mileage on rear shocks. -New Windshield and rear window glass gaskets replaced with OEM rubber -New hood seal -New OE front turn signal lenses and gaskets (left and right) -New OE rear turn signal gaskets (left and right) -Tie rods -New OE engine main seal -Rebuilt carbs -New Oil Line -OE valve cover gasket -New electronic Fuel Pump -Brakes. pads. rotors and brake lines all replaced -New wheel bearings -New hood carpet -New hood struts and engine lid struts -Freshly rebuilt seats with OE specs and materials Notes: Two repair manuals and a big folder of receipts will go along with the sale of this 912. I have records dating back to the early 90's. The car needs push rod seals. Not a huge deal but in the winter time if you are running the heat it smells a bit “oily. ” I don’t want to make it sound unbearable because its not AT ALL. I just want to make a note although I believe this is fairly common in the older Porsche’s. ***I have a new OE set of push rod seals that will be included in the sale of the car. I cannot find the diagonally placed "912" rear deck lid emblem. I don't think I ever had one but this emblem/part can easily be sourced. The speedometer and odometer are functioning properly and the mileage reads 44. 829 as of the time of the start of the auction. Also included is an original Porsche antenna. misc seals (new OE headlight seals). spare electronic fuel pump. oil filters. and misc nuts an bolts. etc. I will include the (grey. pictured) 15” Original Fuchs wheels and tires for an additional $1000 if the next owner wants them. They are all date stamped original Porsche wheels(not repops) but non-matching to this 912. The tires are house brand with good tread life remaining but are many years old. If the next owner doesn’t want them I will gladly keep them for the next Porsche that I hope to own someday. The car is a fantastic daily driver and feels safe and confident driving down the road. The car handles beautifully with the new suspension and brakes that have been installed. The motor drives/sounds great with good power and the carbs have been rebuilt and are tuned perfectly. The 5 speed manual transmission shifts nice and smooth. with no grinding (if shifted properly. of course). I’m not sure how old the clutch is but it feels excellent. Headlights and turn signals all function properly. Spring is right around the corner. what a great time to buy a new toy! My wife and I are expecting this spring and sadly. the Porsche needs to go to a new home. I've slowly been selling off my superfluous toys in anticipation of the new addition. I envisioned keeping this car forever. or at least for many more years in order to take advantage of the ridiculous appreciation that the short wheel base Porsches are seeing recently. Sadly. I need to free up the cash that I have in it so. pardon the cliche. “my loss is your gain. ” It really is a great little car. Every time its driven. people wave and smile and turn their heads. Good luck and happy bidding!I am willing and able to help arrange shipping or delivery for $1/mile. Otherwise. if the auction runs the course for a full 7-day auction cycle. the buyer has the option to purchase the 15" Fuchs wheels for the additional fee of $1000. Consider this a Buy-Now-Bonus. On Mar-02-15 at 11:04:08 PST. seller added the following information:I had a question as to whether or not the car leaks oil and if it smokes upon start up. Also a question about the stock wheels that will come with the car but are not pictured. Here is my response:"I put a large sheet of paper under the 912 last night and there's not a drop of oil or fluid anywhere on it. These cars are notorious for leaks and it doesn't appear to be leaking. for the moment. ! No smoke upon startup. the motor is healthy. I will take photos of the stock 15" 912 wheels and post them in the Flickr gallery in a few minutes. They have been powder coated black by the previous owner and I still have the original chrome hubcaps that came with the car from the factory. New tires were installed right before I purchased in December of 2012. They are basically new tires (probably less than 300 miles) because immediately after I purchased the car I sourced the grey set of Fuchs wheels that are pictured in the ad. The tires mounted on the stock steelies are Kuhmo 'Power Star 758' Radial Tubeless tires. there are 5 total new tires which includes the full-size spare (also powder coated black). The previous owner was into the "vintage. pizza pie cookie cutter" look for tires and so the Kuhmos are tall and skinny. Not sure if this was the size that came on the car originally but he purchased these tires in 165-80-15. I would personally replace these tires with a more "modern" profile but I haven't had the occasion to because they've been in storage since I purchased the car. Just my personal preference. The wheels are in great condition. I did notice a VERY slightly bent lip on one of the wheels but you can just use that one as the spare. This bend is hardly visible unless you look close. They all balanced properly without a problem. They honestly look fantastic and would look really nice on the car. Stay tuned for these wheel pictures added to my Flickr album once I get back from the storage unit. "
