Today we are offering one lucky person the opportunity to own a coveted 1965 MGB roadster that has been restored over the course of 25+ years to virtually concourse condition. The car has had quite a life. We’ll endeavor to help you understand its whole history:
This is a 2-owner vehicle and both owners were long-time friends of one another. The first owner bought the car new in England back in 1965 and drove it there for a year or two while in college. Then he had it shipped to the U.S. Savvy MGB aficionados will see telltale remnants of its beginnings in Europe like the color of the original taillights which differ from their American export counterparts. The original owner didn’t put all that many miles on the car but it did deteriorate rather significantly due to the fact that it was kept and used at an east coast beach house. The salt air, and and rough roads really took their toll on the car and the owner did little to prolong its life. Eventually it got so bad that the owner stopped driving it and relegated it to long term (sometimes outdoor) storage.
The second (and current) owner knew the car and its story well and eventually talked his buddy into selling it to him back in the early 90’s. By then it was a fixer-upper and so he bought it for a song.
The next 25+ years involved a true labor of love and investment of over $45,000 documented dollars of expense; not to mention all of the personal time he put in and the cost of storage, axes, tc. The owner, ohn, no doubt you’ll eventually meet him if you have serious interest) committed to doing a ground-up restoration that included complete dis-assembly and either restoration or replacement of every single part of both the body and engine. He remained true to his main objectives throughout the project which included the greatest possible level of authenticity and originality that he could achieve while winding up with a car that could be driven and enjoyed rather than simply being stored and shown off. To that end, e repaired and restored every original part he could save, earched the planet for new-old-stock replacement parts whenever possible, nd only used reproduction parts when totally unavoidable – and even then he only chose the best. He also used only professional restorers, echanics, nd machinists to do his work. You’ll find no signs of backyard mechanic’s work here.
The end result is a car that both aesthetically and mechanically is just a few scant points away from original factory perfection. Of course, ince the restoration took so long, ou should expect to find little signs where, espite always being garage-kept, ome slight effects of aging are findable here and there, ut no doubt you’ll agree… that’s just what happens to vintage English cars no matter what you do. Spots we noticed include a scuff on the driver side dash that doesn’t seem to accept polishing, some light superficial rust on the unpainted metal edges of the window guides that occurs from condensation forming on the glass and then later dripping down, nd some micro-pitting and other deterioration on a few spots of the exterior chrome. The radiator, hich is original, ooks discolored and has some verdigris patina on it. It works great but the cooling system pros warned against repainting it because it can reduce the effectiveness of the fins. Thus, t stands out as looking unrestored. If it bothers you, ou can buy a new reproduction, ut of course that too will discolor as you drive the car.
With regard to originality, xpect everything to be as it originally was built with the exception of the transmission which was replaced with an overdrive type, nd of course there is an added overdrive unit on the firewall and switch on the dash which could have come with the car but didn’t. If you want to have the original transmission back you are welcome to have it and it works fine so far as we know, ut it sure is nice to have the overdrive. The radio works but has no antenna so it doesn’t tune any channels. The owner being deaf, e didn’t make this a high priority and in fact mounted the outside mirror in the original antenna hole. Some gasketing is not as it was originally but now works better as these cars were very prone to leaking as this one still does here and there under certain weather conditions (read on).
It’s much easier to tell you what’s wrong with the car since most of it is so perfect so here’s the short list of know shortcomings that haven’t been mentioned yet. The paint job looks beautiful to us but we are not paint finish experts. Apparently (based on the comments of a self-proclaimed paint finish expert), uper picky paint collectors might feel that the body should have been 100% stripped before repainting. This was not done. While some areas were fully stripped, ther parts just got sanded down and feathered out in certain areas where the paint shop felt it was OK not to fully remove the original paint. We honestly can’t see evidence of this to our (pretty darned scrutinous) eyes but if you’re a paint fanatic, ou should come and inspect it for yourself to feel confident in the level of finish quality. If you’re just a normal car lover like we are, elieve us… you’ll be more than thrilled with the look of the paint. This was clearly no Macco paint-job. The new custom-made top, hough purchased at great expense and installed professionally, oesn’t lay flat around the rear corners. We’re not sure if it can be stretched and is sold as-is in that way. No leaking problems but a little annoying to look at when the top is up (see photos). The trunk tends to leak a bit under certain blowing rain. New factory original gaskets are in place but likely some additional non-original gasketing would solve this easily. There’s also a little tricky leak around the grill on the hood in front of the windshield when it rains. We haven’t figured out the source of that yet. The driver door gets hard to close in very cold temperatures and then works fine again once the heat runs for a while. There are likely other little annoyances that we’ve overlooked so please view the photos very carefully of plan to come and inspect the car for yourself if those kind of things might be deal breakers for you. We’re doing our best to point out everything we know but this is a 50 year old car after all, nd despite whatever efforts we can make to look it over thoroughly, o doubt we’ll overlook something.
The car comes complete with many extras including extra rims, never used custom cover and many extra parts. Of course it has its original manual, ack, ools, eys and other such items. More importantly, t comes with a fully detailed biography covering every aspect of the restoration, long with many hundreds of receipts, rochures for parts, nd photos documenting the complete transformation of this vehicle.
We have not mentioned how it drives yet but something had to come last. You’ll find that the motor runs like new as it essentially is, aving only a handful of miles on it since the total rebuild. If you’re a 60’s era MG lover then you know how they sound (kind of a brab-brab-brab sound) and how they start in the cold (begrudgingly), nd how they can sometimes be finicky. This motor will be exactly as you’d expect for better and worse. Folks expecting it to run and sound like a brand new BMW will no doubt be disappointed. Folks who already drive old Jags or Triumphs, r MG’s will be thrilled. All fluids and wear items like wipers, rake pads, ires, attery etc., re either brand new or virtually new (the spare tire is original to the car but was never used). Thus you can expect it to handle, rake and otherwise drive as a MGB should. All lights, ipers, eat and defroster work as originally intended. Again, f you’re expecting the comfort and feel of a new BMW then you’ll hate driving this car. If you’re expecting to re-live the experience of a 1960’s roadster then you’ll be in 7th heaven.
