Though probably done 15 years ago. this paint appears excellent and has only minor defects that do not detract from the overall appearance and attractiveness of the MGTD. The tan canvas tonneau cover and top are in fine condition and the side curtains are as new. having never been used. All chrome is very good. particularly both bumpers. The interior. with tan seat and door panel upholstery. compliments the green exterior nicely. The wood dash and steering wheel are very attractive. The underside is California clean and supports that the car has not seen rain since restoration. The fender wells are painted BRG. The engine bay is very clean and attractive with a few chromed accents and the red painted block. DRIVEABILITY The car runs and drives very well. It starts immediately when cold and equally as well once it is fully warmed up. The engine does not hesitate and it runs smoothly as it is shifted up through the gears. Over the course of 21~ years. we have had a number of early MG's that have significant noise in the transmission (particularly in 1st & reverse. but any gear). This is not the case with this "TD. " Not only is the transmission quiet for this vintage British automobile. the car shifts well (both upshifts & down shifts) and does not pop out of gear or slip. There is no noise in the rear end and the drivability of this MGTD is far superior to others that we have owned / driven. The MG steers straight. does not pull to the left or right. or exhibit any drivability issues. MG enthusiasts will notice that the instrumentation is MG authentic. The clock (located in the lower portion of the tachometer) is not working. but they didn't work shortly after the cars were produced! The MG runs at normal operating temperature with no indication of overheating. The other gauges are fully functional (speedometer. tachometer. oil pressure. ammeter) as are the lights. horn and the turn signals (note turn signal switches on the dash). Engine oil pressure is well within the normal operating specifications and the MG runs cool even partly as a result of the updated. multi blade cooling fan. The car is totally sorted. usable at highway speeds and. personally. we would not hesitate to take it on a long journey. The MG is perhaps the most mechanically solid example that we can remember owning and it shows no signs of unusual engine noises. smoking. or other issues. Uncharacteristically. the car sits for prolonged periods of time with little or no signs of minor oil drips! MG's were produced in Abingdon. England from the early 1930's until production ceased in 1980. In 1936 the MG Car Company made a dramatic change in the design of their sports cars when they introduced the MGTA Midget. the first in the T series. Just over 3. 00 MGTA's were produced in three years of production. In 1939 the MGTB was introduced with the now famous XPAG engine. Only a few were produced as in a few months World War II broke out. During World War II production of MG's ceased as the MG Car Company was put into service for the war effort making various military items. When the war ended the MG Car Company was anxious to get back to making sports cars plus they started taking an active interest in selling their sports cars in North America. During the War a number of American GI's had an opportunity to experience the T-Series MG's. When the War ended a number of these cars were imported and then formally sold into North America. The first post-war model. the MGTC was produced from 1945 to 1949 with a total production of about 10. 00 cars. However. these cars were still lacking the necessary features to make them attractive in the U. S. market and a total redesign of the MGTC was needed if the MG Car Company was to capture a significant portion of the North American market. The resulting car. the MGTD. was first produced in late 1949 and had its formal introduction in January of 1950. There were a total of four model years; 1950. 1951. 1952. and 1953. Production ended in August 1953 with a total of 29. 64 vehicles. During that period the MGTD saw many subtle changes. but nothing drastic.
