1960 MGA 1600 MK1 ROADSTER. ONE-OWNER, CALIFORNIA CAR WITH 72,294 ORIGINAL MILES. ALAMO BEIGE WITH RED TRIM, BLACK TOP. HEATER. WIRE WHEELS. ADJUSTABLE STEERING WHEEL. SUPERB, RARE, UNMOLESTED ORIGINAL.
Proudly offered for sale, from KURT TANNER MOTORCARS, is this extremely well-preserved, one-owner, highly original MGA Roadster in the rare and attractive color scheme of Alamo Beige with it's original red leather trim. This car was just purchased from it's original and only owner from the San Diego area. This car has spent it's entire life under the Southern California sunshine. It still retains it's original title (pink slip) from 1964 when the car was paid off through financing. Rarely does a car like this become available for sale...The previous owner bought this car new from San Diego Imported Cars in La Jolla in 1960 and drove and maintained it for many years. In 1967 in downtown San Diego, it received a modest exterior respray in a lighter hue of the original Alamo Beige color, which is what it currently wears now. It is believed that at that time the current black soft top was also fitted. The car was driven occasionally until about 1991 when the owner purchased another vehicle for work. The car was stored at his mother's house from that date. He would visit and regularly take the car out for a drive until the brake hydraulics went away a few years later. The car was put up on blocks and stored for the next 23 years...Recent work by us includes a cleaning out of the fuel system, new brake/clutch master cylinder, rebuilt clutch slave cylinder and rear wheel cylinders, new battery, and a light detail with some paint touch-up. The car now runs and drives exceptionally well. It starts easily on the key, revs well and hard with no smoke or noises, has excellent oil pressure (40-80psi), good clutch bite, perfect shifting gearbox, great roadholding and ride, and is an absolute delight to drive ! (like most sorted MGA's).
The undercarriage of the car is extremely well-preserved and original, has never been cleaned, and has the usual build-up of road dust/dirt as one would expect from a car of this age/mileage. The engine bay has been recently cleaned, presents well, but could use a further detailing of some components.
The body on the car is absolutely rustfree with excellent factory gapping and fit to all panels. There are the usual minor scrapes, dings and touch-up that chronicle years of driving and some storage, but make up the car's life story.
The perfectly original trim is the same. A few pieces of carpet have been replaced with some black loop, and the front cockpit railing was recovered at one time in vinyl. But the rest of the trim is amazingly 100% original. The spare tire bag is beautiful. The dashboard facia is factory-painted in it's original color. The instruments, switches, knobs, steering wheel, etc. are all original and functioning properly. The period Motorola radio is currently not operating. The black soft top is excellent except for some minor plastic window clouding (The original color for the soft top and sidescreens was fawn.) The car has it's original red vinyl sidecurtain stowage bag with the original sidescreen set (for restoration), and also a nice set of aftermarket aluminum-framed ones. The leather to the seats and armrest show usual wear. The previous owner attempted some repairs with some red tape. The car also includes the factory lifting jack with handles, engine starting handle, grease gun, bleeder tin with tube, tire valve tool, Lucas points adjustment tool, radio blank plate with MG logo, an extra original key, extra grille (damaged) with piping, and an old black tonneau cover.
Overall, this irreplaceable MGA Roadster is a rare find. It has spent it's entire life with only one single caretaker, in one of the kindest environments in the country for preserving an automobile. It is finished in one of the rarest and most attractive factory color schemes for the MGA, and is a nicely optioned desirable1600 MK1. It could benefit from some further light cleaning and detailing from it's next enthusiastic owner, but should be preserved going forward as testament to the original cars.
