Description

This vehicle is listed locally and I reserve the right to end the auction early if it sells on Craigslist. Up for sale is one of the sweetest (and possibly meanest) FJ40 you will come across. This project was a true ground up restoration roughly six years ago. and has since been driven fewer than 7K miles. The vision for this truck was to blend classic land cruiser styling with newer technology (e. g. . fuel injection. newer Toyota. etc. ). and have the meanest looking and sounding truck around. After almost three years. 1. 00+ man hours. and over $40K (hard costs) spent. the truck was finally finished – true to the vision and a labor of love. No matter where this truck goes. it gets compliments. Because we had a dedicated off road rig. this truck was built to purely terrorize the streets…in other words. if you are looking for a serious wheeler. this isn’t the cruiser for you…and honestly. this truck is way too nice to beat on at Brown’s Camp (a local offroad park). This truck has been up Firebreak Five (moderate offroad trail) and made it just fine. but the thought of messing up this body didn’t make wheeling much fun. Beyond the factory Toyota frame and some of the body. many of the parts on this Cruiser are one-off. or Chevy. Even though there truly are too many goodies to list. I’ll do my best to describe the highlights below. Also I need to throw a shout out to Matt and Tony of Land Cruiser NW (http://landcruisernw. com). as they helped greatly with this project and are very familiar with the vehicle. Land Cruiser NW did offer a pre-sale inspection - I encourage you to contact them directly to learn more. ENGINE: The motor is a built 350 TPI motor out of a Corvette. It is a fuel injected engine that starts and idles every time. The motor was built at one point and has gobs of power. Off the line. this will smoke most vehicles you might find waiting at a stop light. This engine has always seen synthetic oil. is topped with a K&N. and stays cool with a Northern aluminum radiator. One of my favorite things about this truck is the exhaust note. It has a Y-pipe that comes into a single 3” exhaust with a 40 series Flowmaster. It has a mellow grumble that gives you a hint that something sinister under the hood. If you want to turn it up a notch. there is an electric exhaust valve that has a 3” dump out the bottom before the muffler and boy is it loud. With the exhaust open and wide open throttle. this thing has caught a few folks off guard. SUSPENSION: The stance of the rig has been drastically altered. The front end has been moved forward and the rear was moved back. The springs are Old Man Emu – sprung under. The shocks are Bilstein 5150 shocks. This rig handles extremely well thanks in part to a shackle reversal kit. STEERING: This rig has Saginaw power steering. making turning the 37” tires a breeze. The power steering pump is a Toyota unit. engineered to work with the Chevy engine. The power steering reservoir is a thing of beauty. built by my friend Dave Lund; his aluminum TIG skills are on another level. On the inside. there is a GM tilt column with a 14” Grant steering wheel. WHEELS AND TIRES: The wheels are FJ cruiser wheels with 37” Goodyear MTRs. BRAKES: Disc brakes on all four corners. Stops on a dime. The front are four piston Toyota calipers off a mini-truck. and the rear is typical Monte Carlo setup. The master cylinder was starting to go in the fall and I replaced it about three months ago. along with the booster (less than 500 miles on it since then). TRANSMISSION/TRANSFER CASE: Automatic TH350 (recently rebuilt). adapted to a Toyota mini-truck transfer case. B&M drag-style shifter is perfectly positioned to bang through the gears. AXLES: The front is Toyota mini-truck axle (w/mini-truck hubs) and the rear is a custom width Dana 60 w/limited slip. The rear end is bulletproof. BODY: One of the most common compliments this truck gets is the color (BMW Phoenix Yellow). The body is also heavily modified with: > Campbell Enterprises fiberglass hood - raises the front fender line which allows you to better tuck the 37s. The hood is also on gas struts and held down using hood pins – which I think adds to the “there is something sinister under the hood” look. Mini one-off fenders were also fabricated to continue the new hood’s fender lines. > The vent on top of the front cowl. that almost always leaks. was shaved. > One-off tailgate with a Corvette license plate holder to pay tribute to the Corvette engine. > All new sheet metal in the rear – zero rust. > Joe’s Racing gas cap. > Custom front bumper designed and built by LCNW. > VW MK2 smoke headlamps with HID bulbs. > VW smoke side marker lights. > 7” driving lights. > Tail lights are 4” clear LEDs that light up VERY bright red. ROLLCAGE: I love the design. courtesy of Matt at LCNW. The cage actually extends into the engine bay. One of my must haves with this cage was that it needed to be easy to get in and out of the truck. I have owned enough other 40s before to know that a misplaced down tube can make exiting the vehicle awkward. Not an issue with this cage. INTERIOR: Corbeau suspension seats and RCI 4-point harness. These seats are level with each other. unlike many of the 40s out there where the passenger sits up higher. The seats are black. or were. until they weathered a little and are now a dark blue. I was going to order new seat covers (fairly inexpensive). but figured the next owner may want to change up the color combo. The dash is a one-off. with a set of VDO gauges. and a stereo provision. There is a GM Performance tach mounted to the center of the dash bar. A one-off center console has six rocker switches. a push button ignition. and hides a (very warm) Mojave heater. OTHERS: > Truck was completely rewired using a Painless chassis harness. and a factory GM engine harness. > Has a BestTop soft top and doors. The soft top was customized to lower the roof height to fit standard garage door openings. > Has a one-off aluminum gas tank built by Dave Lund. > The tub is LineX’ed. There are a couple of items I have been neglecting since last season – replace a right front end inner axle seal and change the mounts on the rear shocks to allow for more travel. These will be done before the next owner takes possession. I really hate to sell this truck. but looking to start another project with my kids that would fit the entire family.
