Description

Matching Numbers and rare!1973 Norton Combat Commando Engine Number: 220471 Frame Number: 220471 The Commando's vibration-beating Isolastic frame enabled Norton Villiers to successfully prolong the life of their hugely successful parallel twin. Launched in 1967. the Commando used the preceding Featherbed-framed Atlas model's 745cc engine and AMC gearbox. and was an instant hit with the motorcycling public. being voted Motor Cycle News’ 'Machine of the Year' for FIVE consecutive years! It might have been a little down on top speed compared to rivals such as BSA-Triumph's 750cc triples and Honda's CB750 four. but the Commando more than made up for this minor deficiency with superior mid-range torque and steadier handling. The Combat engine specification Commando. introduced in 1972 featured a breather tower bolted to the rear of the crankcase. between crankcase and gearbox shell. and had uprated internals from the standard machine and delivered 65bhp over the standard bike’s 56bhp. The bike offered here. of 1973 vintage. is one such Combat Commando model. A superbly original bike. which has been stored for many years. being recently liberated and given a full mechanical overhaul by marque experts. Glory Motorworks. A matching numbers example. the bike’s cycle parts were refurnished. including brakes. suspension and steering. Calipers were rebuilt. and the master cylinder repaired. Wheel bearings received attention as needed. The engine was also gone through with valve adjustment. carb overhaul and full fluid change. A new and correct fabric wrapped wiring harness was installed with a new battery. A myriad of adjustments and tweaks bring the bike up to great riding condition. The engine starts easily and idles well. has great compression with strong and responsive power and the gearbox shifts smoothly through a good clutch. The brakes are excellent. especially the front – like a modern bike! – and all electrical works as it should. Cosmetically the bike is in excellent condition. considering its originality. There is no evidence of accidents or restoration. apart from the steel gas tank. having just been painted to a very high standard. This is a fantastic opportunity to buy a true British motorcycling icon in great. original. riding condition with a clean. clear title and owner’s manual.
