Description

Up for bids is a 1977 Harley Davidson XLCR Cafe Racer, ne of less than 2000 built. This bike rides and runs well, ut has some cosmetic needs, hich I will try to describe in as much detail as I can. This bike is offered at no reserve, o bid early and bid often.
The GOOD:
  • This bike starts and idles well. The transmission shiftssmoothly and the clutch engagement is positive and linear. The double disk front and single disk rear brakes work well, nd have just had the fluid replaced. The forks feel good going down the road and don't leak. The Koni rear shocks feel like they should as well.
  • The engine runs well and does not make any unpleasant noises. The compression test showed 155 PSI in the front and 160 in the rear.there is somesignsof minor oil seepage, ut no leaks.
  • The charging system is putting out 14.2 V at 2000 rpm.
  • All the lights and horn are working
  • The fiberglass fairing and tail section are not cracked.
  • Engine and framenumbersmatch
The BAD:
  • The turn signals and stock mirrors were removed long ago. A good quality pair of bar-end mirrors has been fitted.
  • The lenses on the original instruments were getting yellow and hazy, o a pair ofreallycrappy aftermarket instruments were installed. These now look worse than the originals. (I would throw these away, uff out the originals, nd refit them.) The originals go with the bike. The actual mileage is 19,838 on the original plus 340 miles on the replacement.
  • A couple of the snaps on the seat cover have pulled apart.
  • The battery is aging and needs to be put on a trickle charger if the bike isn't ridden for a few weeks.
The UGLY: This is the downside of this bike. To be anything other than a rat, t needs a cosmetic restoration.
  • The exhaust system is not rusted out, ut needs to be taken off and repainted with high-temp paint
  • The tank has a pretty good dent in it (looks like something fell on it.) I suspect it could be worked from the inside and then repainted.
  • The frame and swingarm have significant paint loss and some light surface rust. I would sandblast it and repaint it.
  • The front master cylinder did not have the proper diaphragm gasket in it, o brake fluid leaked out the vent hole and removed most of the paint. Needs to be stripped and repainted. I would do the calipers too, s they don't look much better. I have installed the correct gasket, ut too late.
Recent work: I have done a little work on this bike to get it ready for sale. I had planned to restore it, ut too many projects and too little time.
  • Replacedthe fuel hose, rained the tank. The bike was run dry when put up, o the carb was nice and clean.
  • Replaced the brakefluid, ront and rear.
  • Compression test and cleaned the plugs
  • Rode it up to temp and drained the oil tank. Refilled it with good 50W. This bike has no filter.
  • General check-over, heck charging system, heck tire pressure, tc.
  • I have not gone to any greatlengthsto make it pretty. I wanted to present it as-is, arts and all.
