1978 Honda CX500. VERY cool bike and speaks for itself. When I got it a few months ago. it had some problems that were mostly aesthetic because it was old. and had tipped over in the previous owner’s yard. As far as I know that’s the only time it had been down in 37 years! A low 22. 00 miles on a legendary bullet-proof. water cooled motor and drive train. It had been well maintained and I rode it home 80 miles with zero unusual noises or issues. The carbs have been rebuilt and the exhaust is stock so there was no attempt at shade-tree jetting. I also changed the plugs. oil and filter. It runs and performs as stock. shifts and stops as it should. I cut the seat rails back 4 inches and added a fender stub with the single brake/taillight assembly. The tank. sadly. had a crease and dent in it that I couldn’t massage out. so I covered the entire tank and rear fender in high-end pickup truck/off-road bed liner. The inside of the tank is terrific. however. so I prepped the outside and rolled it in the bed liner epoxy you see in the pics. It has a pebbled texture and is gas and oil-proof. It looks fantastic and has new badges. although you can still see a crease on the right side of the tank when in the right light. It appears to be a run. but is in fact the tank beneath. See the picture. but know that in person it isn’t nearly as noticeable. The front fender is also bobbed. with killer chrome spikes running down the rib. The handlebars were swapped for new. wider. black powder-coated scrambler bars. along with the bar-end mirror and root beer grips that look great with the titanium pipe wrap. I took the exhaust off and wire brushed it clean. then painted it with high-heat stove paint. including the expansion chamber. There was only surface rust to begin with. which was taken off before painting. These bikes are getting harder to find. and especially in as good shape as this one. The reserve is low and fair. so bid to win. New bars. mirror. taillight. custom brat seat. headlight grill. badges. shifter seal. petcock. main fuse and cable. grips. painted fairing and side covers with screened brass banjo grommets and much more. While the bike is awesome and I trust it on a long ride. also remember it is 37 years old so no guarantees. When I fail to turn the petcock to the “off” position. the right carb will drip a little bit. This is an O-ring on the tube connecting the two carbs. but I didn’t want to disassemble everything again and instead just turn the petcock off after riding. So turn the petcock off or replace the O-ring. I think of it as great for commuting or scooting around when the road is calling you. I have a clear Oklahoma title signed by the previous owner. which will. of course. go with the bike. Don’t get all excited and bid if you don’t have the money or have to ask your wife or girlfriend. You bid. you buy.
