Description

2002 KTM 520 EXC - Checked out, ith re-built “everything”, nd exceptionally clean.

My KTM-520 is exceptionally clean, nd mechanically perfect. To start with, he 2002 “520” is one of the most popular KTMs ever built. Here’s why, it’s both ‘electric-start’ and ‘kick-start’. That takes a LOT of the pain out of being out on the trail. My bike has been very well maintained by a professional motorcycle mechanic. It has very low-milessince the rebuild, t only 353. - I am the second owner and got it from a middle-age guy in Salt Lake City, ho built it up; then wanted something ‘tamer.’ I kind of have the same problem he had… - I’m a young 70, nd it's still too much for me too. My loss is your gain.

Here’s what he had done to it:

Motor completely rebuilt, ncluding a 570, big-bore’ kit by “Thumper Racing” -- ($2,008.51) http://www.thumperracing.net/ - Dennis S. was the mechanic – I have ALL the receipts.
– The re-build included:
-new cam (w/ valve-springs, amshaft gear, nd cam-chain)
-new Bearings
-new waterpump
-new piston & rings
-valve job (cut seats and lap valves)
-valves (exhaust/intake)
-valve-stem seals
-KTM clutch kit
-plugs / K-N filters / oil
-JD, tage-2 jet kit for carb
-FMF, slip-on', ftermarket exhaust
Frame

-Renthal 14-tooth front sprocket
-Renthal 50-tooth rear sprocket
-‘All-Balls’ front and rear bearings
-‘All-Balls’ chain-roller
-D.I.D. 520 ‘gold’ chain

Forks

-KTM original; rebuilt with Race-Tech seals / bushings / valves / oil

Rear

-PRS – Professional Racing Suspension rear shock; with fluid reservoir

Tires
-Dunlop “D606GF” knobbies front (90% remaining)
-Dunlop “D606GF” knobbies rear (90% remaining)

Additionally: it has a “Vapor”, fter-market ‘dashboard’ -- a Brand new, aintenance-free gel-battery, resh synthetic oil and filter, ew NGK spark plug, nd the radiator was recently flushed, nd replaced with new KTM coolant; brakes flushed and new Dot-4 added. - All nuts/bolts/and fasteners were checked and either tightened up or (where necessary) torqued to factory specs. There are no leaks of ANY kind, NY-where. Going with the bike is all my service manuals and documents. The ONLY blemish on the bike are the two rear mini-turn signals at the back -- which are easily replaced.

Here’s how “Motorcycle News” magazine (a motorcycle reference magazine) put it…
“…The first thing you notice when you get on it are the “un-500-like” dimensions. It feels more like a 250. It’s narrow-waisted, ith a low center of gravity and roomy ergonomics. One touch of the starter button and it produced a sound nothing like those ‘ringy’ two strokes. This was every bit a thumper; throaty and amazingly quiet.

I rode it on some nearby fire roads and trails. The ample torque and wide ratio transmission made sure there was a gear for every circumstance. (Second or third, ake your pick.) And power slides and fourth-gear wheelies were a twist of the right hand away. Unlike the Yamaha’s high-rev horsepower, he KTM engine makes its power more like a traditional big thumper. It pours it on from the bottom through the upper middle of the rev range.

In tight, echnical stuff, he weight of the 520, eally makes itself apparent. It’s positively nimble for a “big” bike. You can grunt it over practically anything. If you make a mistake and kill the engine, ust punch the starter button and you’re on your way.

Sure, here is a gripe or three. Changing the oil is a bit of a pain; (two filters, wo screens and a bit of gymnastics to get it done.) - But, verall, omplaining about this machine like making fun of the mole on Marilyn Monroe’s face. You run out of adjectives to describe it. - My recommendation is that if want the lightest, astest woods-bike money can buy, his KTM is it…” – Chris Myers
