I am reluctantly offering one of my restored 1947 Salsbury M85 "Imperial Rocket" motorscooters for sale. It is a beautiful machine, eautifully restored. It runs nicely, nd all of the electrics, nd the speedometer work as they should. The engine mounts, hich are essential to a properly functioning Salsbury have just been replaced with new ones.
The Salsbury was marketed to 1940s consumers as a stylish and inexpensive substitute for a second car. It was designed to be very easy to use. Instead of hand controls like a motorcycle, he Salsbury used standard controls that were already familiar to car drivers. There is a flat floorboard, ith an accelerator pedal (the "Go" pedal) on the right, nd a brake pedal (the "Stop" pedal) on the left. There are no gears -- the engine drives the rear wheel by an ingenious set of belt-driven pulleys that provide very smooth acceleration. There is an ignition key to turn the engine off (a kick pedal is used to start it), nd an ample trunk for transport of groceries and other items. It had very good suspension for its day, nd is a joy to drive.
Although the design was an excellent one, he Salsbury was only sold in modest numbers, nd well preserved examples are rare today -- especially on the east coast of the USA.
Information on the Salsbury can be found on the website of the Salsbury Restorers' Society, hich exists to provide support to owners of these fabulous machines.
Correctly restored Salsbury scooters have been fetching jaw-dropping prices in the last few years. Several are currently advertised online for $20,000 and up. Actual sales have been documented in that range as well.
This particular Salsbury is especially desireable. It comes with keys to the ignition and trunk locks, wner's manual, nd parts book -- AND THE ORIGINAL BILL OF SALE FOR THE SCOOTER, ith number matching the bike's frame number, s well as the ORIGINAL SALSBURY DEALER'S CARDBOARD INVENTORY TAG still attached to the original keys!!! How unique is that??!! But wait! There's more! This Salsbury is riding on NEW OLD STOCK original-type tires, ecause there are NO modern tires that look anything like the original ones that came with the Salsbury. Also, his scooter still has its original salsbury exhaust, n excellent condition -- another very rare feature!
Is that it? No! There is STILL more!! This Salsbury comes with a few RARE accessories. First, here is the extra spare wheel, ocated in the trunk, nd specifically referenced on the original bill of sale! Second, s the chrome front bumper assembly. Third, s the rare, hrome grab rail attached to the seat -- an original Salsbury accessory. Finally, here is the absolutely unique chrome rear bumper accessory -- while many Salsburys have rear bumpers that wrap most of the rear body, nd look a little clunky, y Salsbury has a UNIQUE, tylish rear bumper, he like of which I have never seen on any other bike!
The restoration of this Salsbury was performed, o the highest standards, bout 20 years ago. It was a Grand National award winner at AACA meets on the east coast. Since then, t has been preserved in a dry, limate controlled environment, nd only run occasionally, o keep the engine functional. I have recently replaced the motor mounts, djusted the brakes, efreshed the fuel line, leaned the carburetor, nd otherwise made sure the bike is roadworthy.
However, his sale is AS IS, ith no warranties, xpress or implied. There are no refunds. What you see is what you get.
I do NOT have a title for this vehicle. I am selling it on a Bill of Sale only. However, his scooter is old enough to be registered in NY based on a bill of sale only, o no title is required. I had to select "Clear" in the title section above because ebay did not offer a selection for "bill of sale only". THERE IS NO TITLE for this vehicle, nd it does not need one in NEW YORK. Check your state's laws before you bid. There are no refunds!
I will NOT crate or ship this scooter. However, can recommend an excellent, easonably priced shipper if you are not local and need a recommendation. Shipping must be paid by the buyer, nd I accept no responsibility for any loss or damage after the scooter leaves my possession.
Note: I have listed the mileage on this Salsbury as 30 miles. That is what the speedometer says. However, lease note that the speedometer was only installed during the restoration of this scooter. I am NOT representing that the scooter has only had 30 miles put on it over the course of its long life! However, ou can be assured that this is a low mileage scooter.
I am listing this action as NO INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS. However, f you are an international ebay member, ou are welcome to contact me and ask if I will make an exception.
I have selected CASH ONLY as payment method for this action. I will not accept paypal, hecks, r any other method of payment. If you are not able to pay cash only on pickup, ou must contact me to discuss alternative payment arrangements BEFORE YOU BID. I reserve the right to refuse to sell this scooter to anyone who does not comply with these payment requirements, hich are a condition of this auction. Likewise, f payment is not made within seven days of auction end, r if I have not agreed to extend that time, reserve the right to relist the scooter, r to sell to someone else.
All in all, his is a tremendous opportunity for the discriminating scooter collector -- which is why I have so liberally sprinkled exclamation points into the body of this ad! !!!! !!!!!
