Description

Up for sale is a Chang Jiang 750 M1M motorcycle with sidecar. The background of Chang Jiang is fascinating and can be found here: http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Chang_Jiang_(motorcycle)The bike runs a 746cc air-cooled twin-cylinder side-valve four-stroke engine with 12-volt electric start. It has a four-speed gearbox with reverse and high-speed rear drive gears. The bike is located in Beverly Hills. California and I welcome viewings. The bike weighs over 700lbs so I encourage local pickup. but am happy to ship it at buyer’s cost and if the buyer makes all the arrangements. History I am the first owner of the motorcycle. and bought it in person at the China Nanchang Aircraft Manufacturing Company factory in June 2002 when I was working nearby. I specified it in black with five red stars painted by the factory on the gas tank. I had the bike shipped to Los Angeles in several crates and built it upon arrival. Registration was simplified using the “SPCNS” designation allowed by the California DMV for self-assembled vehicles. It is fully street legal and has a clean title in my name. Although California does not currently require smog checks for motorcycles. the 1959 registration year will most likely make it exempt if the law is ever changed. Since purchase. I haven’t used it much as I continued to live and work overseas. Due to its vintage appearance and sidecar. it gets a huge amount of positive attention. both from bikers and non-bikers. I am selling it as I prefer classic cars to bikes and have run out of garage space. Cosmetic Condition The bike is in good used condition with some minor paint damage and surface rust on the cylinder jugs. pipes. wheel spokes. rear-view mirror stalks and chrome turn signal pods. The chrome isn’t great quality from the factory and has minor pitting. Keep in mind that these bikes were never concours. even when new and the paint quality from the factory is not to the typical Western standard. I have tried to capture the major cosmetic issues in the photos. Other than these issues. the bike looks great with un-faded paint. orange glass old-style turn signals with no cracks. clean seats and perfect tonneu cover for the sidecar. I have removed the rear rack. passenger foot peg and side mirrors but they all come with the bike. Mechanical Condition The bike fires right up from cold. runs well and has no known mechanical issues. The carbs are PZ28s. recently cleaned and balanced. There is a very small oil leak from the gearbox. perhaps one small drip per week. No other leaks. All electrical accessories (lights. horn. starter) work properly. It tracks straight with the sidecar attached. The brakes work well enough for the relatively low speeds driven. even with the weight of the sidecar and passenger. This is not a superbike by any stretch of the imagination. but will cruise comfortably at 45-50mph on a level road. The sidecar is easily removed and the bike can be run solo. One of the best features of the Chang Jiang is that it is so easy to work on and all parts are cheap and readily available from a wide variety of sources. Upgrades I have made a number of mechanical and electrical improvements for performance and reliability: · Replaced the original pistons and rings with aftermarket high performance 4-ring pistons which give a noticeable boost in power. · Installed a deep sump oil pan and oil pickup to help keep the engine cool. There is a temp gauge on the oil dipstick as it is important to monitor temp on these air-cooled bikes. · Replaced the stock fuel lines with clear fuel lines and dual in-line filters. · Added brass fittings to the carbs to assist in synchronizing with a manometer. · Replaced the stock air cleaner with a smaller BMW-style filter unit. resulting in a less cluttered appearance and better engine breathing. · Upgraded the electrical system with solid-state electrics including a modern voltage regulator. rectifier board and starter solenoid. These parts are enclosed in a locked toolkit mounted to the side of the bike. resulting in far better reliability and a more vintage appearance than standard. · Installed a smaller high-power Yuasa battery in a custom battery box in the stock location. saving several pounds of weight. · Replaced the center stand with a side kick stand. making it easier to park the bike when running “solo” without the sidecar. · Installed a seatbelt in the sidecar. While I doubt it improves the safety of the passenger. it helps them think they are safe. Spare Parts and Tools The buyer will receive the motorcycle. sidecar and the following additional items: · The original tool kit and owners manual. · A spare set of high-performance pistons and rings. · A spare set of brand new valves. · A spare solid copper head gasket. · A spare right side cylinder jug. · Miscellaneous other stuff I can find. Bonus Items This is a no-reserve auction with a low starting bid. However. if the final price is above $4. 00. I will include the following additional parts. which are not currently installed: · A complete brand new front disc brake setup. · Two brand new DOT-approved Cheng Shin (Maxxis) 3. 75x19 tires and tubes. Fine Print The description of this motorcycle is written to the best of my knowledge. However. I am by no means an expert on motorcycles. This motorcycle is being sold as is. where is with no warranty. expressed. written or implied. Please don’t hesitate to ask for more photos and. if possible. come and look in person before the auction ends. Please remember that your bid constitutes a legally binding contract to purchase this item. If you require an inspection. have it done prior to bidding. After the sale. inspections are not recognized as a contingency to completing your obligation to your winning bid.
