This is Excelsior Henderson HCX Super X number 301. You may also know this bike by the name "Deer Slayer". This was the 8th bike that came off the factory assembly line. This is also the bike that Dan Hanlon (Founder and CEO of Excelsior Henderson Motorcycle Company) was riding when he struck and killed a deer while riding home from the factory late one evening. For those of you thinking that this may just be folklore or myth. simply purchase a copy of his book "Riding the American Dream" and read the chapter titled "Surviving Road Rash". Dan survived the incident and in typical Hanlon fashion powered through his shareholders meeting which was about 12 days after the incident. The engineers at the factory were happy that Dan was ok but they almost seemed more interested in being able to get their hands on the bike! Especially one where a deer made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of engineering excellence. The engineers were amazed at how well the bike handled the impact. Once through with the bike. it was purchased by an original member of the Road Crew factory test riders who then rebuilt it with new factory OEM parts. The cool thing about being a road crew member was knowing the factory paint guys and having access to PARTS!!! The Road Crew member draped this bike in the very rare Sunburnt Red that was only used on the very rare Deadwood Special bikes called Redwoods. Instead of using the Deadwood decals on the tank. he had the gold pinstripe and 1999 EH tank decals put on by the factory painters. So the tank on this bike is a 1 of 1 custom paint scheme that was done at the factory. it is the only tank like this. Once the tank was done. he used front and rear Redwood fenders to complete the look. The Sunburnt Red color paired with the white walls and all the OEM chrome provide a look that is difficult to beat. This bike is a straight up head turner. So that is the story. now onto the bike! This is one fantastic looking machine that draws a crowd everywhere it goes. This bike has been to the annual Maggie Valley run. tamed the Tail of the Dragon and the Devils Whip and also rumbled the windows through the strip in Daytona. It has also been to the Atlantic EH Roast and Ride at Marty and Jamie's in VA (great source for parts and service). The bike runs flawlessly and has had multiple updates performed on it including the transmission update. oil pick up tube. Super X tune. Oil Cooler and proper belt tension. In addition it has new front and rear motor mounts and a battery that was replaced last season. This bike is regularly ridden and shows normal wear for a 16 year old bike with this mileage. It has a few nicks and chips but no dents in the tins. There is some minor pitting on some of the chrome but nothing that we felt had to be changed. Wheels were replaced when we put the new tires on it and they are in excellent condition. The crisp rumbling through slash cut OEM mufflers announces your arrival and will also let your friends know when you have saddled up to head out. Deadwood special handlebars top off the whole package. We take excellent care of all our bikes and in most cases we ride them as our personal bikes. The provenance and documentation that comes with this bike is excellent. This is the perfect bike for the collector or collector rider. it represents a unique chapter in motorcycle history and rarely will you ever have the ability to purchase a unique piece of motorcycle history with documentation that includes being written about in a published book! In addition to the factory owner’s manual still in plastic with its own Initial Production Series Brass Plaque. you will receive the following with this bike.
