1947 Lincoln Zephyr Sedanette Fastback
Rarely seen Zephyr four-door sedanette fastback 292 CID V-12 engine, a Lincoln exclusive Three-speed manual transmission Pace Car Yellow exterior with tan interior with Bedford cloth Suicide rear doors Documentation includes Polaroid photos of the car, purchase order dated 8/18/2015 and a letter to State Farm Insurance from a company that previously restored the car, dated 12/9/1980For collectors looking for something different to add to their rolling stock, MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this rarely seen 1947 Lincoln Zephyr Sedanette Fastback. Previously resided with the same family since 1995 – 21 years!
After World War II, along with the rest of the auto industry, Lincoln was busy resuming a civilian footing after more than three years making ordinance and vehicles for the war effort. Lincoln pitched its Zephyr series against the top trims from Cadillac and Packard and the Lincoln was unrelated to other Ford products of the era.
The car’s Pace Car Yellow paint is overall in very good condition but there are blemishes, most notably a small dent on the right rear fender skirt and around the driver’s door handle. The windows are crack-free and intact and the car’s lights are similarly in good condition. The chrome bumpers still look fine after all of these years and the car rolls on 7.60-15m tires with wide whitewalls, wrapped around steel wheels with Lincoln “dog dish” hub caps. The car’s body panels are straight, the engine bay is tidy with its dual horns and the battery looks new.
This example has Lincoln’s 292 CID V-12 engine that runs smoothly and is connected to a three-speed manual transmission with a column shifter. Other new, underhood features are a new radiator, new hoses, an all-new wiring harness and a new six-volt battery.
Similar in design to the 90° Ford flathead V8 introduced for 1932, the Lincoln-Zephyr H-series V-12 had a narrower 75° between cylinder banks. The engine used aluminum-alloy heads and cast-steel pistons, as well as two water pumps. It also had a unique distributor with a coil assembly that actually consisted of two coils, one for each cylinder bank. Though the Zephyr V-12 no more resembled previous Lincoln engines than the ubiquitous V-8 (despite sharing the latter’s stroke), it was more like a “12-cylinder Ford” than a classic multi-cylinder powerplant in character.
The tan cloth interior is very roomy. The bench seats are in fine condition and done in Bedford cloth that show some fading from age. The carpet is in good shape and the headliner shows very well. The symmetrical dashboard shows off its large, classic gauges and huge radio grille. The two-spoke steering wheel and shifter are in good shape. The side panels are done in a champagne pink and feature thoughtful period touches like cigarette lighters on either side of the rear seat. Completing the interior are the factory AM radio, an emulated wood grain molding and futuristic pushbutton door releases.
Documentation includes Polaroid photos of the car, purchase order dated 8/18/2015 and a letter to State Farm Insurance from a company that previously restored the car, dated 12/9/1980.
Competition to this Lincoln in 1947 included Cadillac’s Series 62 Touring Sedan, Chrysler’s Windsor Sedan and Hudson’s Commodore Eight Sedan.
