Description

1972 Mercedes 280 SE Have you ever dreamed of owning one of these iconic super cars of the past????How many have you looked at in person or on the internet. nbsp;and once you saw theCar. found out that it was full of rust. nbsp;or had the bottom of the floorpan under coated????Most of these cars who lived north of a line from Denver to North Carolina. the “Salt Zone” you will have a difficult time finding one of these 40+ year old cars thatDoes not have some to severe rust. There are some exceptions. This car was delivered to Southern California in 1972. First owner had it many years. Then car moved to Tucson. Arizona. where it spent to the first 40+ years. I owned several of these great cars in the 70’s and 80’s. Loved everyone. About 8 yearsAgo. I began looking for another one. I probably looked at and drove nearly 100 cars. /p>Most had serious mechanical issues. rust or interior issues. The restored cars can beVery pricy. depending on the model. The coupes can run $15k to near $80k. The convertiblesFrom $30k to well over $100k. They are essentially the same as my sedan. mechanically. When I found this car. seller sent numerous photos. especially showing the wheel wells. and totalUnder belly. Interior and engine department all looked in very good condition. It seem as if this car spent most of it’s life in a “cocoon” . Seller sent me a detailed list ofAll the mechanical upgrades that he was aware the car had received. It took me about 5 years of casual looking to find this car. If you have ever wanted one of these classic. iconic sedans of the past. please look closely at thisOne. there are not many of them left. especially at a very reasonable price! When buying on of these cars: ****** Do not buy on of these cars that has been setting for years!!! You will find untoldIssues with all seals. and many hidden things that are routinely repaired when a car is driven regularly. The result is big $$$$$$$. Overall condition: There is a small booboo on RR corner where some one just lightly touchedSomething. Stainless trim is bent slightly. and a few hairline cracks in paint. and a small touch up on the paint. Glass is perfect. has window tint for Desert climate. Wood on front windshield bow need refinishing. dash pad has typical crack. Front door panels in lower rear edge. show damage from seat belt metal poking door panel. I have two replacement door panels. Door wood trim is in general good original condition. Dash wood is in “Exceptional” condition. Rust: This car shows a few spots on door rocker panels. where shoes have banged the paint over the years. These areas (minor)Show some surface rust. Otherwise car is rust free!!!!On inspection by local body shop. car appears to have “never” been in any type of major front. rear. or side collision. nbsp;except for the small ding on RR corner. see photo. Paint condition is “Impeccable”. especially for 43 years. Cost comparison: I would estimate if you found a reasonably solid car with limited rust. It would Cost upwards of $10-30. 00+ to restore one to this near original condition. Mechanical: Engine shows 130. xx miles. Engine starts and runs fine. Transmission (floor shift)Shifts properly. Power steering has small leak. These engines have a steel crank shaft and connecting rods. thus redline is about 7. 00 rpm. This car will run easily at 85-90 mph down the interstate all day long. The 2. 8 liter inline 6 is “bullet proof” . Mercedes made 10 of thousands of these engines. Reliability. /p>Fuel economy. and general ease of service on the 6 is easier and probably less expensive that the gas guzzling 4. 5 liter V8’s. I have driven this car as an occasional daily driver for the past three years. *****Reason for selling: I have always wanted a Coupe in one of these classics. I am purchasing a fullyRestored: new clear coat paint. new leather. newly refinished wood. mechanically refreshed engine & 4 spd. This car is a coveted 3. 5 liter 4 speed coupe. A once in a lifetime buy. Unfortunately the price is about 5 times higher than I’m asking for my sedan. The following items have been replaced in the past 1-5 years. I have records for some items. other items are obvious by looking at condition. Battery & cablesAll rubber hosesRadiator boiled out & paintedNew motor & transmission mounts ($1214. 00)Newer exhaust system & mufflerNewer fuel pumpNew heater leversCarpet has been replaced at some time in near pastHeadliner appears to have been replacedSeats are MB Tex. but are in amazing condition for 43 yearsA/C has been converted to new Freon. leak checked. blows Ice Cold $760. 00Tires have about 3-5. 00 miles New brake pads and complete brake inspectionNew front end alignmentSpecial extra: I have purchased a 3. 21 ratio rear end from a 4. 5 car. This will makeThe car run near 125 mph. and lower engine rpm’s. Optional cost of $750. 00. 00 See the Blue Coupe photo. and you can see why I am selling the Sedan. Good luck bidding.
