Stunning Restored 1976 Porsche 911S

You are bidding on a very special 1976 Porsche 911S.

Although one might argue that the 1976 variant of the 911 is not the most desirable, and that might be true, it is also probably the most affordable of all 911s available today.
So you might ask, why spend $40,000 restoring a 1976 911? The simple answer is: because I could.

At the risk of sounding obnoxious, let me explain. I own a private restoration shop. When times were good, I collected a lot of cars. Most required some manner of restoration. I preferred cars with cosmetic issues, because our painter is very passionate about cars and paints to a show quality.

Now the building where I stored and restored these cars has been sold and I need to shrink the collection. I only have room at home for so many cars, thus I am selling a few (see my 1991 911 Turbo that is also for sale). If they don’t reach their reserve (which I never disclose) then I’ll keep that car in deference to the cars that DO sell.

What set this car apart for me and why I liked it so much then was the sunroof delete option. I’ve not seen another. It seems that all 911’s, of this era, came to the US with sunroofs. It makes sense. It was a desirable option then and it inflated the dealer’s pricing. Today, however, this delete option makes the car very unique as does the color. Only 2069 1976 911 Coupes were brought into the United States in 1976.

I bought this 911 from Long Island probably 10 years ago. Initially I restored the interior, recovering the seats. I also added new carpeting. They are still in new condition.

The car then sat in my showroom until a year ago when I decided to apply a $20,000 paint job to the car. This required removing the interior and all of the glass. The trunk deck and engine cover were, of course, removed. The chrome and stainless were in excellent condition but we polished them, just the same. All new rubber was installed throughout (windshield, back glass, doors, hood and engine cover).
Three coats of color and three coats of clear were applied in the original color. The color is called: Oak Green Metallic. To say she is stunning is a vast understatement. It’s arresting. Even if you are not a fan of a green hue, you have to see this car. The metallic finish adding to the awe factor.

I added show quality polished Fuchs some time ago. They are original Porsche Fuchs – and are beautiful, again, show quality. They are, however, 16”. The 1976 Porsche came with 15”rims. The slightly larger rims set this car off nicely, you’ll agree.

There are new tires on the car.
I’ve lowered the rear end a bit to suit my tastes. Nothing was altered. If you know Porsches, you know that you can adjust ride height. I can easily bring it back to standard height for the buyer. It looks too high to my liking. I do have pics of the car sitting at that height (just ask and I’ll email). Also, due to the lower ride height and the larger tires, she will rub over a severe bump. Nothing major, but it does occur.

1976 is the last year that the headlight surrounds, in chrome, were standard. They are really appealing to the eye. As is the window trim in stainless. This car also enjoys the pencil thin stainless trim around the wheel openings and the stainless rocker panel covers. I’ve nor been able to determine if the car could be optioned this way from the factory, although I doubt it. More likely they were a dealer option. I tried to purchase NOS rocker panels in stainless, but couldn’t find them. So we restored the existing covers to near show quality. Honestly, you’d need to be on your stomach to see any imperfections.

Here is a list of new parts added during the restoration:

• Bumper guards, front and rear, factory NOS – and not cheap.
• Bumper rub strips (impact strips) front and rear, factory NOS
• New trunk carpeting (not shown in pics)
• New rubber weather-stripping all around (required when properly painting a car)
• New tires
• New Fuchs show polished rims ($1,000 each)
• New Interior cabin carpeting
• New engine compartment decals
• New taillight lenses
• New shifter bushings (a common 911 issue)
• New Door sills
• New windshield (back glass is original) The original was fine, I just couldn’t justify painting the entire car and not replacing the windshield (this is, however, aftermarket)
• Original books with dealer stamps to 1983. See pics.

Mechanically the car is in excellent condition. We may have added new brakes some years ago ( I usually do) but I don’t recall. She brakes excellently.
She runs and idles very well – once she is warm.

She tracks straight and true.
She shifts perfectly.

Although possessing only 157 hp, her svelte weight of only 2,469 lbs, makes her very nimble and fairly quick (in the higher rpm range). If you are serious about this car, her performance is not your first concern, I’m sure. But you’ll be pleasantly surprised and entertained. I have not put 300 miles on this car since I bought it ten years ago. I never drive my collector cars. I’ve also never shown this car. I’d be very curious to know how well she would do on a show field.

As I stated, my 911 had (and has) zero rust. In fact, you can see the “Zeibarting” (sp) holes that were drilled and capped from the dealership. This method of injecting rustproofing in the car’s crevices did actually work. My 911 had ZERO rust when I bought it and was always properly stored. I took the trunk carpeting entirely out of the car to take a revealing photo (attached).

The car could use new door map pockets. The existing pocket are ok – but they are not new. I didn’t get around to it. You can see them in the pics. Ok but not show condition (in my opinion). They can be found however.
The lighter is present I had it out when taking the pictures.

One of the twist dials for the Factory A/C is missing. I just noticed it when I took the pictures. Probably not very hard to find on Ebay.

The sun visors are not new. They are in good condition – but not new to the restoration.

The radio is aftermarket – works well (new speakers) but I do not have the original radio sadly.

The car was the 16th Birthday Present to the daughter of the Dayton Hudson chain of stores. The car was sold by Atamian Porsche Audi on April 14th, 1976. The warranty card was also stamped the same day.

She is a jewel in my collection and will command good money. That being said, quality is never cheap. The pictures tell the story.

I encourage inspections. The Porsche Exchange (authorized Porsche dealer) is 5 minutes from my home. It can be taken there for an inspection (at your expense, of course). She is 40 years old and I left the mechanicals alone. At 66,000 miles I saw no need to fiddle. She runs great. Of course, we changed the oil, etc – but nothing else is/was required.

The deposit is non refundable – please make a note of this. If you don’t pay for the car after you win it, I look like a scammer and you look like a fool. It hurts my reputation to relist it.

Deposit Due ...

The successful high bidder will submit a $500 NON-REFUNDABLE Deposit due immediately following the close of the auction. This $500 deposit is good towards the purchase of the vehicle and will be deducted from the total amount of the purchase. We accept PAYPAL only for the initial deposit only. If the vehicle cannot be picked up or paid for completely within 7-days from the close of auction, Deposits and fees are NON-REFUNDABLE if the vehicle is not paid for.

Balance of Payment Due ...

The buyer agrees to pay remaining balance due (plus applicable fees and taxes) within 7 days of the close of the auction. All financial transactions must be completed before delivery of the vehicle.

I have a clear title in hand and ready for delivery. If payment is made other than wire transfer (ie: certified check), I will hold the title for 5-10 business days or until ALL funds have cleared. Please call if you have any questions regarding our titling policy.

Every effort has been made to accurately and fairly describe this vehicle to you. I have tried to disclose all information known about this vehicle for you to make an informed decision. I have posted many pictures, especially those that show flaws. Please be advised that used vehicles will have typical scratches and dings inherent for their year and mechanical parts are subject to fail. I welcome and recommends a buyer's inspection. This car is NOT brand new. It is personally owned by me. Please expect a certain amount of wear, use, and flaws, as is standard on ANY pre-owned vehicle that has been driven. All pre-owned vehicles including this one may have dings, nicks, chips, scratches and any other marks that are associated with use consistent with age and mileage of the vehicle. Any known obvious defects that are not normal wear and tear will be noted in the listing.
