Description

I am a San Diego Porsche Club member helping a neighbor sell his '72 911 T. I have owned SCs but never an early car. Accordingly. I have gone through the car in my home garage to the best of my abilities so that I may describe this Targa as thoroughly as possible for all potential buyers. SUMMARY: As evidenced in the photos. this '72 T has undergone quite a few changes since its manufacture date. It sports a 3. 0 SC engine (from a '78) with factory CIS. The SC flares are steel and the welds were done very nicely. The bottom of the chassis was sprayed with undercoating more than 10 years ago and looks to have preserved the metal fairly well. All that being said. the original 2. 4. fenders. longhood. front and rear bumpers. seats. side mirrors. and door panels are no longer part of the chassis nor are they available as the Targa was converted to an SC look over 10 years ago. VIN: 9112110525 Engine: 6582058 EXTERIOR: - Originally Albert Blue (door code 325 9-1). Paint taken down to the metal roughly 8 to 10 years ago and chassis resprayed in Guards Red. The work at the time seems to have been performed well all things considered as there are not any glaringly noticeable defects or runs. overspray in some areas but I’ve seen far worse. Per the owner. the shop removed glass and parts when spraying. He has pictures of when the paint work was performed but has not been able to find them at this point. Notable locations mentioned below: - The hood has some paint imperfections which are more noticeable or less noticeable depending upon the lighting; - The passenger door is marred in the area of the side mirror; - Paint chip/scrape on fender lip of rear passenger quarter; - The driver door has a mar in the area of the side mirror; - The targa rollbar’s brushed aluminum has been painted in gloss black; Rust: - There are zero rust bubbles or signs of corrosion on any of the outward-facing body panels; - There is minor rust on the top of the floorboards near the base of the backseat and near or around the pedal cluster (see pictures); - I have not found any rust or rot through the pans. However. the front of the chassis near the pick up points is questionable (see below description and pictures); Body: - As mentioned above. it has been converted to an SC look. Unfortunately the body panels that were removed during the venture are no longer in possession; - The front of the chassis is the weakest point of the car in that the fitment of the hood and lower valance are substandard. The hood requires two people to close. one to pull the interior knob while another simultaneously applies pressure to the hood when closing. - It appears that there may have been some sort of work performed in front of the pick up points in the gap between the pick up points and the most forward point of the chassis (see pictures). Again. I am more familiar with SCs so I do not know if the existing sheet metal is normal or if this was a result of work performed due to rust. due to the SC conversion. or due to an accident; - Body panels (hood. front fenders. cowl. doors. rear fenders. and rear decklid are straight and are absent of any significant or noticeable dings; - The panel fitment of the hood. front valance. gas door. and doors can use attention as the gaps are all over the place; - Glass is good throughout; - Targa top has been recovered and although the material is in great shape and not dried out. the fitment of the targa frame needs attention; - ’72-specific oil filler door and tank remains present and fully operational; - Decklid and wing are in very nice shape and are one-piece. glassed together; - Ignition key does not operate the door locks (no key present for door locks). DRIVETRAIN: - 1978-sourced 3. 0 with CIS. starts right up each time. runs strongly throughout power band; - 915 tranny shifts very very well. nice and smooth. no grinds or stiff synchros; - Clutch grabs well and seems to have plenty of life; - Engine does not drip oil on the floor but is seeping from somewhere as bottom of case is moist; - Oil appears to be seeping from one of the tank-to-engine tubes as there is oil residue in the passenger rear wheel well (see pictures); - CV boot on passenger side is torn; - There is a howling on some turns. I believe a bad wheel bearing; - Brakes function well. INTERIOR: - Odometer. speedometer. oil pressure. temp. fuel gauge. and clock all fully functioning; - Oil tank gauge appears to be stuck. Not sure if it’s a fuse or sending unit issue; - Original steering wheel and shift knob have been replaced; - I believe the seats are from a 996. Nevertheless. they are power and a sore subject of the car as they are not functional (power appears to have been run to them at some point but the seats are not responding at this point); - I have a pair of manual 911 seats (I believe ’74 through ’77) that I can include in the sale; - Dash has cover. two cracks on dash; - Door panels/cards need attention; - Rear seats are in very nice condition; - Rear parcel shelf is covered by an aftermarket piece with speakers. Self appears to be in fair to good condition; - All electrical functioning with regard to headlights. turn signals. brake lights. dash lights. - Fair to nice carpet kit. - Newer weather stripping. SUSPENSION: - Suspension looks largely untouched. - Factory through-body Charlie bar; - 15 x 7s and 8s Fuchs (Part numbers 911. 361. 020). Could not definitively make out date of production. Appears to be 11 of 1970. - Newer tires purchased through Discount Tire. SUMMARY: At this time. this T should be considered a driver worthy of the cosmetic and mechanical attention it needs. While the body has been modified from its original longhood form. it appears to be relatively solid and is definitely able to be driven while the various issues find time to be addressed. The chassis appears to have been the 525th Targa made in ’72 and as many prospective buyers are aware. is a significant and noteworthy year to own. The title is free of salvage or encumbrances and the now-retired owner is ready to hand over ownership to someone that is ready to embrace and get this T squared away. Shipping inside or outside of the U. S. is an option at the buyer’s expense. ****As eBay only allows for 24 pictures to be uploaded. I have included the following link which contains additional pictures of the engine bay. underside. and interior of the Targa:http://1drv. ms/1Ck40OO
