Manual Inventory ID: 01762G Vehicle Description The MG B was originally designed in the early 1960's as a replacement to the venerable MG A. Appearing in 1962. the major advantage the B had/has over the A is in its unibody construction. That is. the MG B was not burdened by the traditional steel ladder frame and was "lighter and tighter" than the A (and the B's British contemporary - the Triumph TR6). Thus. the B weighed less. had better steering and was a more comfortable car to ride in. In most other regards. the car remained an MG A. The engine placed in the B traced its roots to the the 1947 BMC B series engine. The engine. as originally designed. had a 1. 6 litre displacement which. over time. grew to 1. 8 litres. Fuel was fed to the engine through two 38 mm Stromberg carburators which were powered by a SU electronic fuel pump. In 1973. the B's engine was capable of producing 95 hp. This gave the car a 0 to 60 speed of roughly 11 seconds. While this is not considered fast by today's standards. in 1973. this was considered to be a "brisk pace. " The MG B's standard transmission was a four speed manual with optional overdrive. The car being sold here does NOT have overdrive but can still be driven at freeway speeds (80+ mph). The transmissions of MG's are known for their dependability and can handle far more power than is supplied by the B series engine. This generally means they are very long lived. All MG B's came standard with front disc. rear drum brakes. The front calipers were supplied by Girling and used 2 pistons per caliper. Starting in 1968. MG equipped the B with a dual chamber master cylinder thereby supplying two braking curcuits. To American eyes. the batteries of the MG B were oddly placed. The MG B was originally equipped with TWO 6 volt batteries which were wired in series to produce a 12 volt negative earth configuration. Later on. the 6 volt batteries were replaced with a single 12 volt battery but the location remained the same - under a panel behind the passenger seat. The car presented here maintains this placement as it helps center the car's weight distribution (but it makes a "jump" impractical with the top up). The MG B is typically divided into three eras: Mark I (1962-1966); Mark II (1967-1972) and Mark III (1973 - 1980). In reality. the changes are relatively imperceptable with the exception of the 1974. 5 and forward cars which were given the "Damn! That is an ugly rubber nose!" treatment. The car presented here is in excellent shape. It has been repainted once in its original color. The paint still presents well and the car nicely upholds the look and color of the traditional British roadster. The car has no signs of rust infiltration in any area (I repeat. the car has NO RUST!). According to the maintenance records we have. the car was owned for a period of roughly 15 years by "Judge P" who lived in and around Winter Park. Florida (Judge being a title not a name). These maintenance records show his impeccable upkeep of the car from the late 1980's until 1999. Based on the records we have. it appears that the car was placed into long term storage in the early 2000's where it remained until it was purchased in 2010 by a "Mr. C. " of Fort Lauderdale. Florida. After I obtained the car. I replaced the alternator and put in a new battery. I also installed a new AM/FM/MP3/iPod stereo and new door speakers. The car's top is completely servicable and the car comes with a full cockpit tonneau cover and a half cover both of which are also servicable. Finally. I performed an oil change and replaced the oil filter. Based on my inspection of the car. I see no signs of an active oil leak from the rear main seal. the valve covers. the transmission or the differential. Thus. to my eyes. the car is not leaking oil. This car is presently in "buy it. drive it. enjoy it" condition and. in my further opinion. represents an exceptional value for the astute collector. The true joy of the car is in its precise steering and impecable weight distribution. While not the fastest car. it is a well balanced. adequately powered auto and is a pleasure to cruise around in on a sunny day. If you are interested in seeing the car being driven then please see my YouTube channel - TheBavarianMotors - for a short video of the car.
