1974 Volkswagen Westfalia
Let me start by saying that I have owned a handful of antique vehicles over the last ten years or so, ncluding a couple busses, nd not much compares to cruising down the street in the stereotypical 60’s/70’s VW bus, onking the horn at every one you see, topping into the car show and stealing all the attention, etting up camp at the edge of the ocean, r just having a safe place to sleep after consuming too many cosmopolitan’s at a summer cookout. My plans were to restore it, ravel across country with friends, nd eventually settle down and use it as the family camper. Unfortunately I just bought a house and money has gotten pretty tight, o I need to sell all my toys I’ve collected over the years, hich includes her. With that said, lease, lease, lease- do not bid if you do not intend to pay- time is truly of the essence for me with selling and therefore relisting it will be quite a burden, ence the low buy it now price.
Well over 100 pictures available! See here: 1974 Westfalia Pictures
This is an extremely solid, ll original, arly 70’s bus. I spent a very long time looking for a solid bus, hey are hard to find. The reason I waited and searched forever before I finally pulled the trigger on this one- it is 100% ORIGINAL PAINT, ll original German metal (no panels have been replaced, o floors have been touched, he frame and wheelwells are perfect, tc). This bus is extremely solid. Due to it having all original paint it is simple to see that it doesn’t have any bondo whatsoever, hich is hard to find. Most of the factory undercoating is still present on all the floor paneling and frame rails, elping them standup over time without rusting and rotting, hich is very rare for a Bus of this age. No frame or floor patches whatsoever. Not one floor or panel has been patched. I included pictures showing the inside of the wheelwells which have just started to have some of the undercoating peel off, hich is incredible for a 40+ year old bus, nd you can also see the paint which was beneath the undercoating is perfect, ot even any surface rust, nd certainly no need to worry about rot. The frames and panels on most buses this age have been patched left and right, rust me I have looked. The only way to be comfortable you’re getting something relatively solid is by having original paint, hich this has. There are a couple minor flaws which is very common for VW, nd you can see them in the pictures. The rear passenger corner has a little rust and the front driver side dog leg. Both of these are very common, f you’ve ever owned or researched a bus you know what I am talking about, nd you’ll also know they are very easy repairs.
Another thing that really caught my eye with this bus is the interior. The interior is in excellent condition. Has the awesome orange plaid fabric throughout which is in great condition. Only piece of fabric with any flaws whatsoever is the front driver seat cover, hich has a small hole (new covers that match the original are cheap and just slip over the old ones, o no worries there). The cabinetry is in great shape as you can see, ncluding the sink, ounters, rawers, tc. The carpet in the main back area is also original, hich I was impressed by, nd is also in great shape for 40 years old. This is the first year that VW introduced the full bunk bed up top, hich is great compared with the cot they used prior to this. Pop top goes up and down with ease, inges and clamps are good, nd the top itself is solid in great shape. The canvas was removed by the prior owner, am told for storage (to prevent mice issues), ut it is included and in great shape, ust needs to be attached.
Lastly, he reason I am not asking $20-$25K. The bus is not currently running. Prior to me owning it the old engine had some issues and this new one was put in. That’s basically where it stands. It’s bolted in but everything still needs to be hooked up for the most part. Wiring is there and in good shape so that shouldn’t give you an issue. I have not messed with the engine so I can’t say for sure if it’s a great engine or not, ’m going by what I was told. I have a handful of spare parts that can be used for it that will help get it close, ut you will likely have to spend a couple hundred bucks in misc. components, nd a Saturday’s worth of time hooking everything up if you’re handy enough. Worst case scenario you pick up a brand new crate motor for @$2K, nd you’ll have yourself an incredible bus that’s probably worth $25-$30K, nd you’ll be into it for well under $15K. So keep that in mind. I hate to sell it non running because I’m losing out, ut I need the money ASAP.
If you’ve never owned a VW Camper let me say that you will love owning one! They’re a blast to drive and get a ton of attention. When you pull one of these into a campground you’ll notice quickly that it gets much more positive reactions than a $225,000 RV. Everyone has a story, veryone is happy so see it, nd for better or worse everyone asks for a ride.
Again, he body, nterior, loors, rame, tc. are all great, ut remember it is 40+ years old. Please remember this vehicle is somewhat of a project as it’s not currently running, nd will need a few odds and ends. If you have any additional questions please reach out prior to bidding. The stool show in the pictures is not included, s I have promised to a friend of mine. The bus is sold as is, 1,000 deposit via PayPal due within 24 hours and non-refundable, ull payment due within 72 hours (3 days). Payment must be made via wire transfer, ash in person, r PayPal (not preferred as they charge an arm and a leg)... wire preferred. Shipping cost is buyer's responsibility. Willing to work with shipping company to help coordinate pickup. Bus is for sale locally as well and therefore I reserve right to end the auction early, nless of course you use Buy It Now, hich is priced extremely reasonable at $9,200. Buy it now tends to disappear as soon as someone bids, o if you would like to make me an offer and do not see the Buy it now option just shoot me a message.
