Description

This auction is for my old Volkswagen 1984 GTI. When I was younger I bought a new one in 1983 (same car). It was the most fun car I have ever owned so a decade ago I bought this used 1984 GTI with the intent of restoring it to stock condition. But then my girlfriend and now wife moved in and my business kept me focused on other things. That was Ok until now, ut my wife has gotten a job in another state that is 1500 miles away. She says I need to sell this GTI because it is my third car and it will be excess work to move it, nd she is probably right.

--- History ---
What I know about the history of the car is the original owner purchased it up North, etired to Tennessee, nd later sold it the young man I bought it from. He was using it as a daily driver and it was not in good condition. The shocks are shot, he tires are old mud and snow tires, nd it ran poorly. The interior was filthy. The headliner had dropped and the back pillar fabric ruined by a previous sunroof leak.

--- Description ---
Of course, ike all GTIs from the mk1 era, t has a manual transmission. The odometer reads only 67K miles, ut it is broken and that is what was on the car when I got. So I have no idea how many miles it really has. The VIN# is 1vwDC0173EV026345. The car is titled with no liens. This was one of the last VWs made in America before VW pulled out until recently when they built a plant in Tennessee.

Shortly after I got it we vigorously cleaned the interior and it turned out pretty good. The rear side plastic and shifter console is sun faded, ut the door panels are still really nice without any speaker holes cut into them. The dashboard is cracked at the left side of the glove box, s these cars are prone to do. I got new sunroof cables and fixed the sunroof. I also gave it a tune up replacing the spark plugs wires, lugs, oot, nd oil and it ran Ok, ut that was ten years ago. After a year of sitting in the garage I dumped the gas and recycled it. It has been that way in my garage since then occupying space. I don't know whether the engine is still usable after being idle this long. This car did not come with air conditioning, hich is good since it would be R12 if it did.

The previous owner painted the entire car flat black, xcept for the lights. The original non-metallic paint was probably sun-faded and chipped after two decades and that was a cheap solution. Maybe it can work as primer, aybe not. The previous owner also got a new front windshield just prior to the sale, o that is still new. The car has an old cassette player.

ebay only allows 12 photos, ut I took a bunch. Go to http://www.lsdatanet.com/gti/ to view all the photos.

--- Requires --- To be operationally safe, his car must have new tires and shocks. The tires are probably from the early 2000s or maybe 1990s. The two front ones have slow air leaks. The only thing the tires can be used for is holding the car off the ground for storage and transportation via trailer.

The driver's seat is shot and the fabric on the remaining seats is old and looks like it will easily rip. Parts like the headliner (fabric was replaced), river's side door panel, ome light, pillar and headliner trim, ear wiper bottle and motor will have to be reinstalled. The rear hatch shock cannot hold up the hatch and needs to be replaced (a properly sized 2x4 is included though).

--- Buyer ---
If you are considering bidding on this auction, hen you should have experience working on vintage VWs. In addition, ou will need additional money to purchase parts like tires and shocks/coilovers, aybe even an engine. Many buyers of this type of car think it is a good idea to transplant a newer VW VR6 engine in this 2000 lb car. I thought the original engine was a great match for this car.

--- Conditions ---
If you win this auction you must visit Birmingham, L to inspect the car and pick it up using a trailer. No shipping.
